This seems to be an 744 flying this route, is this the 2-class product with angled-flat in J or ???

Thanks

It's been a 3-class 744 refurb (w/ Skybed MKII) on the 2 times I have taken it... same in the reverse on QF52, which I have done more often again

Its more often than not a 3 class ER, they sub the long haul flights with a trip to SIN, however on the odd day it can be an old bird!

Hmmmmm because I'm trying to book a BNE-LHR trip using AA miles and one of the options is BNE-SIN on QF then SIN-LHR on BA but on the BNE-SIN its booking into J.
Alternative option is to book via SYD then guaranteed F all the way but in BA, would like to try the QF product (which I understand on the refurbed 744 is the same as the 388) if possible.

The sole 2-class bird of the fleet is long gone.
OJD got used on the transcon run mostly just prior to her retirement.

Oh ok just realised that 3-class 744s do not have F but at least it seems the J on them is always fully-flat.
Hmmm.

What do you guys reckon ?
Slum it in J for the BNE-SYD or backtrack to SYD to get F all the way ?
It's the same price.
Tempted to go the former coz its just easier. Doesn't seem to be any OW flights out of BNE in F ?

There are no F OW flights ex Brisbane and have not been for a long time, I would go ex Sydney to be frank and enjoy a real F lounge to boot.

I was on it last week. It was a new J config.

Came home on QF6 to SYD last night and was surprised to get an old config 3 class 744. Didn't realise there were any still left.

Does the old config you flew still have old F and angled-flat in J ?
I wouldn't think they would have angled-flat in J on a 3-class when J is the highest class of service ?
I'm guessing since PE is fairly new for QF any planes that have it would have also been refurbed with the new fully flat J probably at the same time that PE was put in ?

If any of that makes sense lol.

Still quite a few, you had OJI which operated my QF5 Saturday, there is also OJA OJC as well as a couple of F birds.

The non refurbs have old J whether there is a F cabin or not, and have PE. There are only 9 that have the new J seats, six ERs and three refurbs, OJS, T and U

Everything else is old!

Thanks Markis for that info.

We are getting off-topic, but....
To take it further which routes do the six ERs and three refurbs usually fly ?
LAX-NYC, BNE-LAX, SYD-DFW and SYD-SCL ? (which of these are definites and which of these most prone to be swapped to the old config ? or are none of them definite lol).

SYD-JNB is mainly old ?

Qantas source has a jet tracker, the only route they need to be on is QF7/8.

QF51/52 have been very consistent with the new configuration over the past few months according to Qantas source. Whereas QF5/6 seem to get the old config more often than not, unless the A333 steps in. I've got an upcoming QF5 and QF52 both with the new config (5B, 5J). I keep expecting QF5 to switch to the old config any day now. But who knows, I might get lucky.

I will say that the catering on the overnight SIN-OZ flights is terrible at the moment. Last nights options were a soup, cold salad or a fish pie. No starter or desert (as I guess is the norm on supper flights). Bowl of soup was literally a bowl of soup (funnily enough!). No side salad to go with it. Breakfast this morning was a toasted sandwich that I didn't even bother with (reports came back as ordinary). By the time I got my first drink it was with the "meal" which was over an hour after takeoff. I managed a single glass of wine before trying to sleep (on the sloped bed).

It's just not good enough for the fares being charged especially with the poor Skybed MKI still being used. I can see why the planes are so empty at the moment.

Agree re the catering, I should add however the planes are not so empty, my flight was Y0, J4.

Something's working then!

My flight out of Brisbane last week left with about 40 spare seats in J, only 4 seated in W and about 150 in Y. Last nights had about 20 J spare plus virtually all of W and about 200 in Y. Guess it's a slower period though.

My experience on QF51/QF52 has been light loads as well but consistent aircraft type.

I have flights coming up next week and early October. It will be interesting to see loads.

I dont want to be booking too far ahead as the vulture otherwise known as Jetstar is circling above.

SYD-JNB is mainly old ?

A very quick guide;

As far as I know...
Always ER (refurb'ed):
-QF7/8 SYD-DFW-BNE-SYD
-QF27/28 SYD/SCL

Usually (but not necessarily always) a refurbished aircraft:
-QF51/52 BNE/SIN
-QF15/16 BNE/LAX
-QF107/108 SYD/LAX/NYC

More likely to be older config:
-QF5/6 SYD/SIN
-QF21/22 SYD/NRT
-QF63/64 SYD/JNB
-QF127/128 SYD/HKG *(when operated by a 747, will be older config with first class - note that it is more often operated by an A380)

Apologies if I missed any 747 routes.
