QF500 SYD-BNE this morning... BIRDSTRIKE!!!

Hi all,

Was just speaking to a close friend who was in J on QF500 this morning from SYD-BNE.

About 15 seconds after take-off there was a loud bang and the engine cut out.

Flight turned around and landed safely landed back in Sydney however the flight was delayed for ages.

Apparently it was a bird strike according to Qantas my friend was told.

Was anyone else on this flight or heard about it? Heard nothing in the media as of yet but apparently all the pax on board were s**t scared!

An odd way to put it, with a double entry for the flight?!?
 
Nasty, I hear it totally writes off the engine as well when it happens.
 
There is no reason for a bird strike and return to the airport to make the media. However, you can be fairly certain that if it happened during the height of the APA bid for Qantas that it would have been front page news with implications that if APA was successful that such events would be more common.

Bird strikes are normal and expected events in airline operations. The pilots are trained to cope with it and it sounds like they followed the process properly. But that does not mean the passengers won't be a little shaken-up by the experience, and at 6am some may think it little early for a stiff drink to calm the nerves for the rest of the day.

I assume you mean an engine cut out as all 737's that I'm aware of have two.

Bird strikes are more common than most people would ever imagine. The pilots would in this instance have simple completed the emergency checklist for a one engine inoperative situation. The fact that a bird injestion was the cause would probably have been totally irrelevent to them.

I couldnt for the life of me work out what the joke was - thanks for explaining? I guess I am a bit fatigued by the constant (not here necessarily thank god) references/sniping regarding work choices hence didnt see any joke initially.
 
It was on topic. If the bird's keep striking, a few meetings with the bird's union is the least they can do. If that's no good, the AWAs for all birds flying in Qantas airspace should prevent further strikes.
