QF440 today, go-around on arrival into SYD

Hi folks,
was on QF440 this afternoon from MEL-SYD
As we were quite close to landing (on the last straight shot to runway) the engines powered-up and we turned off the landing approach and did another loop over Sydney.
From my seat (5A) it was clear from my view that there was an aircraft still mid take-off (not even off the ground) on the runway we were lined-up to land on!

Is this kind of thing routine, or would it rate a mention somewhere in the traffic/airport logs?

A little bit disquieting but still it was a bit of extra fun on the flight.

Its fairly routine but at the same time ive still not experienced one

Have had at least 6 personally.

If not in a rush they can be a little fun if its a steep climb back up

I have had a few, but usually in stormy weather, not like Sydney today.

Webtrak shows that QF440 reached an altitude of less than 300 feet on approach to 16R at about 15:45, but then banked right and climbed to turn around. It did a circuit and landed on the same runway around 10 minutes later.

It looks like the Etihad 451 , might have been the a/c on the runway ahead . Maybe a bit slow in taking off than expected.

Yes it looks like EY451 was a bit slow, or QF440 was a bit fast. No expert, but I assume it will appear in the air traffic control reports.

From a pilots perspective this is really a something nothing. It will have been done (or practised) by the pilots many times.

Also you would have done an orbit rather than a loop. A loop is flown in a vertical plane and requires pulling 4g at the bottom which would really test out your average airliner.
