QF30 upgrade chances

Just wanted to get a quick sense from the magicians around here what you reckon the chances are of (a) a points upgrade and (b) an op-up on the following flight:

QF30 (several days out)
T-class fare booked (PE Saver)

A B C D F I J K L M N O Q R S T V W Y
- 9 9 9 - 9 9 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 2 3

Points upgrade request submitted a few days ago by WP, travelling with AA PLT.

My (naive) view is that there's scope for an op-up and my finger will be on the cancel button of the points upgrade request at T-24 hours +1 if no more seats open up. Worst case scenario is flying home in PE, best case save 50k points on the upgrade.

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance. :)

Worst case scenario is flying home in PE, best case save 50k points on the upgrade.

What's your current seat allocation? I think they have stopped the practice of selling PE into J seats (with PE service) on QF30 - they were doing this 6 months ago - but you never know. But being in PE your chance of op-up is probably greater than others in whY.
 
I was in the same situation (well, in Y) several days out for QF107. Chockas. Then last minute so many seat buckets became available :(

I suspect this was due to agents hoarding fares ...

How far in advance are we talking?

Only a few days. Are agents able to hoard tickets like that? I thought that suckh tickets would have to be confirmed already before they show up as taken on seatcounter etc?

dajop - we are in the PE cabin and no J seats are available for selection, otherwise I wouldn't have bothered with the upgrade request at all! ;) J still includes the F cabin though, which is why I suspect it's all 9s.
 
When I checked yesterday on QF.com, there were 9 PE seats empty, despite the W2 above.

This morning the numbers have changed to:

So BlueAU may have been right - B is down by Y is open again. Will keep watching anyway, at this stage I think we will probably keep the upgrade request.
 
A flight upgrade request is only way to guarantee (used loosely) upgrade.

Before QF looks at Platinums to OP-UP, it first processes all points upgrade requests so it is a risky strategy expecting a free upgrade!

Yeah, we'll probably stick with it at this stage - but as I said, it's not that risky, as the worst case scenario of being 'stuck' in PE on a day flight is not exactly too shabby. :)
 
Do you know the H class count? If that is also zero, I would vote for F/J being fairly empty and QF being willing to roll people forward - IF they can get a few full fare economy tickets sold.

I had the same situation - more or less - end of October. though in my case the Y cabin was not filling quite so obviously, and Y+ was not being sold for a while before the flight. Opup at gate.

However - note that as a PLT you are a bit further down the "pecking order"

Hmm - at more than T-24 hours, the points upgrade has already been confirmed (Y and B down to 1, no H that I can see). Is this common? I'm not complaining, but I probably would have cancelled the request and gambled if it hadn't already been confirmed. :confused:

Someone may have been upgraded if there were any unprocessed upgrade requests. It is also possible that there were more upgrade requests than they needed to upgrade and then you would not have been upgraded plus there are a lot of people onboard the aeroplane that you had a good chance never to have bene upgraded

An upgrade is better than a potential upgrade possibility

Agreed - and being able to select F cabin seats is better than PE seats with a slim hope of a Skybed. :)

It's a moot point, but I'm assuming that in the op up stakes, we'd have been lower in priority than other PE pax with points requests and single WPs or SGs in PE, which may not have been the worst case scenario.

But I'll take it anyway. ;)
 
Note that there were reports that back on October, points upgrades were being process/granted 3 or mays days before a flight.
 
Well here is another request for advice on my chance for an upgrade.

QF31 Sat 16, booked into J seeking to upgrade to F, I'm an SG, request submitted at T-90 days.

Currently showing on seatcounter as:

L9 O0 K9 T2 S9 N0 W6 V9 Q0 M9 B9 Y9 D7 I7 J9 R5 C9 A8 F8

Yes SYD-SIN, I'm booked in D class on the first leg of my Circle Asia fare.
 
FWIW, our Ys and Bs returned to 9 the night before the flight - not sure whether this was before of after op-ups, but it was after our points request was confirmed.

Both the F cabin and the standard J cabin were half full, and I don't think PE was full either.

Well if there are any CL's, WP's and J booked SG's who have requested upgrades, they would be in front of you.

There are at least two possibilities for this and probably more:

  • The upgrades freed up sufficient seat for the availability to go to 9's and/or
  • Qantas decided to sell premium seating for why fare in an effort to increase revenue yield for the flight as it became imminent.
