Any idea why QF28 has been diverted to MEL? Was about to leave for the airport to meet family...

I live near SYD airport and the hailstorm that just went though had hail as big as golf balls. Not over yet with more to come.

Wow, that looks nasty

Captain diverted to MEL due to weather and low fuel. They’re now doing loops having refueled and left MEL along with many other aircraft...it’s pretty messy right now!

Arrived at the SYD J lounge yesterday at 12:15 for a 14:00 flight. Asked if there was any chance of flying forward, the Service Desk Rep nearly snatched my FF card out of my hand - they were under instructions to fly forward as many people as possible and gave me a choice of flights.

Decided on 435 which was rammed.

Good mitigation by QF and a good outcome for me.

Regards,

BD

Hopefully doing holding patterns. Loops might be a bit stressful for all concerned.
I call them loops as my partner calls them loops!

SYD international arrivals was jammed when I eventually arrived; EK, MH, CX, CA & QF all arrived around the same window!

I call them loops as my partner calls them loops! .....

I did find this on Wikipedia: A loop is when the pilot pulls the plane up into the vertical, continues around until he is heading back in the same direction, like making a 360 degree turn, except it is in the vertical plane instead of the horizontal.

... no barrel rolls?

Out of curiosity is the aircraft capable?

I realise it’s very likely to be outside the design parameters and not something you’d try with pax, but I terms of the physics, could it be done?

You could barrel roll it readily enough, but I don't think you'd be able to pull enough g to get it to go through the vertical...

Imagine that 1000 times worse (or worserer) at Gatwick right now....
