Hi,
I'm flying from Melbourne to LA (QF25 via Auckland) on Saturday and on the Qantas website it says the route is being operated by a 737-800. My understanding is that the aircraft doesn't have the range to fly from Auckland to LA (range of 737 about 7000km?).
So what's the deal - is it a typo? i'm assuming it'd be a 747-400?

Cheers

Steve

The MEL-AKL leg is operated by a 737-800 and you change to an A330 (or 747) in AKL for AKL-LAX. It is sold as a through flight but there is definitely an aircraft change.

Typically the A330 either comes in from LAX or SYD.

At least it's an 800 with the new interior / IFE - when we took it this time last year, it was a 400.

according to the qantas website their A330-300 has a range of 7000km?
I'm guessing then that it'll be a 747 because Auckland to LA is about 10500km.

It's an A330-200 ... (or 332) ... qantas.com indicates "Range With Full Payload" as 8,500km; however that is for the domestically configured aircraft.

The international configurations take 85 less passengers and the model has a specified range of 12,500Km.

Specifications Airbus A330-200

I looked at that flight yesterday with Flashware, I decided to not book due to the distance on a A330 - done a similar flight last xmas to shanghai and didnt enjoy the AC -please dont ask why because I cant put my finger on it, so booked mel/lax on A380 - gulp, I dont want to fly on that AC either!

Geez, that does not leave you with many plane options to get to LAX. A330-300 is more than capable of getting from AKL-LAX, it has been ploughing that route for quite some time. A380 is now just another aircraft type IMO and proven. I would personally take the A380 anyday as their IFE system in all classes is better than the 330.
I guess you can take a 744 on the right day or fly UA's 744 offering. I guess there V on a 777-300 or Delta ont he saem aircraft. A 777-300 has similar capability I beleive as a A330-300. I always prefer 4 engines than 2 but hav eno issues flying a long haul on A330. I am sure they have regulations when it comes to making sure they can get to their destination with ample fuel in hold.

Whats wrong with flying on the 380?

Just because you can't open the windows.....................
