QF171 diversion MEL-WLG, landing in OHA

I remember them being used in the old days when you'd stop in the middle of no where for refueling at Duabi or Bahrain and they'd open a door or two for some air.

Who were you flying with? That's been a no no, for as long as I can remember.

CX - at BKK - 10 years ago. In fact, the HKG-BKK-BOM route, which I flew several times, by design did NOT let pax disembark at BKK - I don't know why. But I remember sitting inside the cabin in total discomfort as they re-fueled and cleaned the plane before the pax joining in BKK boarded. The doors were obviously open to allow for catering and cleaning etc.

Also once on QF 747 HKG-SYD diverted to BNE because of fog.... probably at least 10 other aircraft diverted there, just milling around for hours. Finally came to rest at some far area of the airfield. Cabin became so hot and stuffy they popped open the doors to let some air in...

The was a way of cracking the doors 3 open on the 747, but actually opening the others is very much against the rules, unless there are some stairs positioned at the door. Cabin crew will not open doors anyway. On ferry flights, even with cabin crew on board, that's done by the pilots.

There are no barriers on board, and even the engineering ones (which is what you referenced) would not be adequate protection against the average small child. Or some adults.

The flight I am remembering, when we stuck in BNE for 5 hours or so, I think it was door 3 that was opened... towards the front of Y yeah? I can't say who opened it, I just remember it being open a crack and getting a nice breeze!

The Av Herald noting:

QF having some fun with NZ ops - this one doesn’t seem to have made popular press yet (distracted by the $100 flights ??)

jb, I think that many airlines do not uphold the standards that you so faithfully and correctly applied within Qantas. About 5 years ago I was on a Lufthansa flight in a 747 - we were going through the takeoff run but something happened that made the pilot decide to abort takeoff - extreme braking applied. The entire undercarriage caught on fire, but we managed to stop. It took a couple of hours before all the fires were put out. As the fires were controlled, we were kept on board. I agree with that decision as no doubt many injuries would be involved in evacuating a 747 via slides...

We then spent the next six hours sitting in the plane as they had to replace all the wheels. Stuck on the tarmac. I was ok, in that I was travelling "up the front" so they looked after us well. But they opened the main door closest to the nose - I recall wandering over to it and being amazed by just how far above the tarmac we were :)

"Newington said some people were "visibly distressed" from the heat in the cabin. Young children and babies had been moved to the front of the plane, close to an open door."
