Hi friends,

I cannot explain what I am seeing and hope that someone may be able to shed a light on this gremlin here.

I am trying to book a return SYD-xLAX-IAD for later in the year.

If I used the multi-city option, there is no QF11 at all to select from, only QF 107 and others.

Were I to use simple SYD-LAX return, it will be there in an instant.

Why is that ?

It appears I may have to call up if I insist on the option of QF11 and maybe cop the $80 booking fee.

Could you explain it?

Of course, the booking is for the same departure & return dates.

I am not sure when you're IAD connection is, but as QF11 arrives quite late into LAX compared to other services, it may be excluding it because of MCT rules. Don't know this for sure. Maybe try expedia or something and see if you can see the routing you want. If you can, then I'd ring QF and if you explain the situation (and they can duplicate it) then they will likely waive the the service fee because the website won't give you the option.

You are right !

When I deliberately change the timing of Flight #2 (LAX-IAD) to a later flight, then return to Flight #1 (SYD-LAX) and voila, QF11 is now is the mix.

It should not be like this.

QF should give us all the options starting with Flight #1 and adjust subsequent legs accordingly instead of relying on passengers to manipulate 2nd/3rd legs to reveal 1st leg options.

Thank you. MarcB

I think it does this to avoid the situation where you select flights and then get a warning on the last page that your flights are too close together. I agree with you though, would be better to start at flight 1 and then only show rolling options as you select that do meet the MCT criteria. I suspect it's becuase the default routing for all bookings is shortest time - well in my experience, anyway.

I guess the issue might be if you search for flights on the same date, maybe the search knows that if you take QF11 that means you can't possibly fly to IAD on the date nominated, so it only shows options that'll work or the date nominated for the second flight as well as the first.

Not quite

As mentioned, I could now configure to make QF11 appear as Flight #1 (in F always, in J occasionally) after I reconfigure Flight #2 first to allow for a later departure (12:30pm instead of the automatic / default QF time of 09:30am).

QF107 arrives in LAX about 2 hrs before QF1, that's why it is listed as the default option - excluding QF11.

The thing that MarcB and I agreed on is that QF should have all flight options available in Flight #1 (in this case, incl. QF11) and cascade the subsequent flights further down the timeline.

Here, the default is QF107 with no option of QF11.

Unless you are aware of and on the lookout for QF11, you will be deprived of that option.

I have no trouble with Flights #3, 4.. after that.

So, be alert that what QF multi-city tool could do to your trip.

What is the alternative here to arm ourselves with all options?

Try direct A to B and note what you like first ? (That's how I get to know of QF11 availability).

Follow by B to C ?

There must be a better way, QF !
