I've got a SIN-PER leg coming up which deposits me in PER at 1am on the same day I have to go to work (6 hours later). Y ticket was circa AUD$300, cash price J is a bit over $2K, I've been offered a J upgrade for 24K points, the normal deal. ExpertFlyer shows J availability as all 9's, but that can change quickly of course. Seatguru is telling me that this 333 has angled Skybeds. Any comments? I'm pretty tempted as the total price in my view of things including points value is just under $1K and I travel badly as a general rule, so will be knackered at work the same day.

Anyone done this sector recently and have a comment on the seating?

No doubt J is better than Y but it isn't the longest flight and the skybeds are angled. Not sure you will get sleep either way.

A330 Y isn't the most spacious but it isn't too bad, at least you have AVOD IFE (albeit a small screen). Personally I wouldn't be spending 24,000pts. Pity the journey is just over the cut-off point to put it in to the next level of points required.

Does the flight show all 9s in Y as well? You might be able to get a free seat next to you in Y, which, for a flight that's only around 4 hours, makes J a little pointless.

That route is flown exclusively by A330-300, which is Skybed (can't remember if MkI or MkII).

QF78 departs SIN at around 1945, and if you're like me sleep won't happen on that fight regardless of cabin class. If you have the points to burn and not intending to use them for anything else, why not enjoy 5.5hrs in the pointy end for little cost.

All the 'cheapies' are showing 0's. Looking at the EF seat map, its already pretty allocated and there are _lots_ of blocked seats, really, dozens, not quite sure what that means.

Yes, me too. I'm not likely to nod off until after 10pm body clock time, so, best possible case for me, maybe 2-2.5 hours.

As for burning points, hehe, I never have enough :) I've been directing to VFF all last year so my QFF tally is a bit lower than my comfort zone ... less than 100K stashed makes me jittery. Am getting pretty used to J being the norm though, thus the ambivalence. Been flying intra asia all over the place in J for AUD$150-$250 for short 1-3 hour flights and its hard to go back :)

I fly on QF78 on a semi-regular basis and generally upgrade only when the flight is full and I have not been able to get a decent Y seat (row 23 or 45). Flight was looking packed just after Christmas so went up to J (surprised there was space as J was unavailable when I put the request through a few days before the flight). Do not sleep however.

If you do get any sleep it will be interrupted by arrival and the trip home. I normally travel with hand luggage only and get through customs etc pretty quick so I am home (Perth CBD) and in bed by 02:00.

Flight is just over 5 hours and actually shorter than BNE-PER (time wise). It is a pretty marginal value upgrade if you can get the seat next to you empty (platinum shadow) in Y.

Not sure what you mean exactly by "cheapies", but if full fare Y is also at 0 (which is definitely possible given it's towards the end of school holidays), it looks like a fully booked Y cabin but nobody is flying in J. Assuming this is the case, high-status pax will probably want to stay put to see if they get an op-up, but low-status pax will probably want to give the points upgrade a consideration, given that there are a lot of J seats empty, most likely won't be receiving op-ups, and, if successfully upgraded, gets them out of a 100% full Y cabin.

I just upgraded on the 072 (in arrivals currently) and it was worth every point. Slept from almost the moment the seatbelt sign went off to the descent announcement.

It's a hard call for the 78 as it departs at a reasonable hour but breaks your night in 2. I haven't paid the points for it before and I doubt I would, if I could snag decent seats such as row 45.

I did the exact thing and upgraded on 078, had work the next day so was a nice trip home. 24K points was quite reasonable too.

The mk1 skybed isnt too shabby. I found it easier not to have it fully angled-flat for sleeping.

Upgrading QF078 maybe not worthwhile but it makes the flight easier.

Upgrading QF072 is certainly worth it, seat belt sign off and tried to get some sleep. No idea what the food was like.
