Looking to book a trip to Hawaii in October and I'm trying to decide which airline to go with. We'll be flying in Y.

QF have a sale on which means the prices are much the same (<$100 difference).

I haven't flown HA before, and last time I flew QF to HNL it was the old 767(?) so I don't know how they'll compare. Any advice?

Note: we've ruled out Jetstar based on poor experiences in the past.

Thanks in advance!

Even with an old A330 I imagine QF would be significantly better. If you really want to save money JQ will probably be half the price of both...

If travelling in economy also on an A330 (with AVOD etc) would there be that much difference between QF and HA?

It's not really about saving money, I'm just keen to go with the most comfortable option without moving up to J as I don't think it's worth it for this route. My other half had a bad experience with JQ in the past and is loathe to fly them again - although perhaps a JQ dreamliner is better or equal to the others flying older A330s.

That is what I was thinking, at least until QF puts upgraded A330s on that route but that won't happen this year.

HA Seat pitch is 31-32 Seat width is 18

QF Seat Pitch is 31 and seat width is 17

JQ Dreamliner is 30 and seat width is also 17

All depends on if you need points and Status Credits.

Thanks Ansett, good info!

I do like the A330s 2-4-2 layout vs. the JQ 787s 3-3-3. Means we don't have to worry about someone next to us getting in and out of seats etc.

It might end up coming down to points earn on QF or AA (HA credit to AA IIRC).

Thanks again for everyone's input.

You also have the option of economy comfort on HA. It's not PE, just Y with more legroom, included IFE and amenities, and it's that much more expensive than Y. But I'd choose HA over QF anyway.

The JQ 787 is extremely tightly packed and very uncomfortable so I'd avoid it too.

I think the Qantas product is probably a little better overall. Also depends if you have Qantas club access etc etc to sway the decision (or can pickup a few passes)

IFE with QF is old Rockwell, new Panasonic IFE on HA.

Qantas has pretty poor OTP into Hawaii, had a few issues on multiple trips last year, and just checking flights for the past week, OTP is woeful. The issue is they have only one dedicated A322 for the route, so if it's late it takes days to catchup, there is no substitute aircraft!

Ahh, thanks for the input - I hadn't thought of that. I've already made the booking with QF so we'll just hope for the best I guess.

IFE doesn't worry me too much as we'll probably just load up the iPads anyway.

Thanks again!
