QF v OW to Europe

the whole things sounds like a classic case study "How Qantas has lost its premium customers"

Yes it does sound that way. Up to 2008 I travelled mostly with QF in both J and Y. Now it is a mix of CX (price, products, schedule), EK (schedule) and MH (price). Last time I travelled on QF was back in 2010.

For the past 3 years, I always consider QF first when booking a flight and I would have chosen QF even if it is just marginally worst than others but the gap is just a bit too big.

Some would say that is not a downside, but the opposite.
By now a fair few of the QF A380 J seats have the "droop" and are not fully flat (design flaw or something), from all reports the new CX J does not have that as it meets a footrest when in bed mode (don't know about an extra support for the feet section). I haven't tried CX J personally but it appears that the droop does not seem to be a problem.
There is a fixed section for the feet on the CX product with which the seat engages with when in bed mode. It's very similar to the old QF F class where it magically anchors to the footrest.

If ever a choice for J between CX and QF, CX wins every time! Their product is far more consistent, and flat means flat, not QF flat*
* definition of flat varies dependent on operating aircraft...
