QF to be hit by EU carbon penalty

Would Gillards emission trading scene fix this?

Getting pretty sick of Europe legislating the world. They're getting to be as bad as America.

I would think so (unless it's watered down to be almost useless).

At risk of being off-topic, this is going to give Virgin Australia a slight competitive advantage until such time as Australia comes up with a carbon tax. The distance (and hence taxable emissions) from Abu Dhabi to Europe is significantly less than from Singapore, Bangkok and (strange that the article doesn't mention) Hong Kong.

All it would mean (form what i can gather) is the Aust government would get the carbon tax, instead of the EU. Either way we will end up paying more.

Wonder if QF would fly to a different port first?

Just thinking out loud here, but shouldn’t Europe really be taking into account the type f aircraft operating a particular route to be fair? For example, I was led to believe the A380 is a lot better emissions-wise than a 747 and even other types of aircraft, so with so many QF services on the A380, I’d think that’d count for something too?

You mean somewhere like, say PVG?

(PVG is 1000 miles closer to LHR than SIN is for example)

From my reading of the article, I believe that the fee would be based on the amount of emissions, so it would be cheaper to fly a more efficient aircraft.

Well stuff introducing a carbon tax here just to save a few bucks flying to the EU....

Maybe if it was in anyway excessive, which i doubt, you could just fly to a port close by in North Africa or Eastern Europe and then fly it in or get there some other way... Makes award flights like the OW 140,000k RTW award flight look a bit better if you fly to somewhere close by, transit and then fly to LHR etc... But just looks like another charge we're going to have to wear, or take holidays somewhere else... Could make Asian holidays more popular if all the prices and surcharges keep going up and up...

Is Switzerland aligned with the EU on this (or are they already ahead of the game)? If not that's closer to most of the EU than North Africa.
