Had a change notification on an existing booking for June so did a little searching and it looks like Qantas are upgrading Sydney - Bali from a 737 to A330-200 from 31 March. Seems to remain A330 right through to 26 October.

Haven't seen any news of this change online yet so curious where the aircraft is coming from and what other changes may go hand in hand? Anyone got any ideas?

Very happy with the change as gone 737 J recliner to A330 J suite! Also seems to be a fair bit of J award availability on the route probably to do with the capacity increase!

They were running an A330 on this route over the Christmas break so hopefully it is a permanent move. I was lucky enough to get the A330 last month and the thought of having to fly on the 737 is not pleasant!

The new 787s have freed up some 747 capacity (some of which had been retired). 747s have replaced 330s on HNL which is where I suspect most of the 330 capacity for DPS has come from.

I was on the 330 earlier this month. Plane was may be 20 per cent full so I enjoyed 3 seats to myself. Interestingly, the Jetstar flight was packed to the rafters.

*optimistically checks my end-Feb booking*

*cries*

Still 737 here. Boo.

That HNL 747 capacity is only temporary if I recall, ending in April. And those A330s were slated to be redeployed onto the Jburg route.

That is a massive improvement!! I have done J in the 737 and the overnight flight was v painful....hope it is a permanent change!

ISTR the 744s have been extended indefinitely on HNL.

My flights have been retimed and I think I'm going through MEL as well instead of Sydney on the way over. I did choose A330s on the Tasman flights but now have 737s via MEL on the way over and A330s on the way back via Sydney. At least it's essentially day flying on the 737s over. I would have had a long wait in Syd if I aimed for A330s the whole way over so decided against this.

737s make me feel like I'm paying for J but receiving PE.

Too late for me, after suffering the 737 in J in May last year and going to great lengths to avoid it in the preceding years ie SYD-SIN on QF and JQ SIN -DPS and return (not a bad status point earner) , this time I booked GA for this years soiree to Bali. Even signed up to their FF program. Will mean that Missus Popeye will drop back to Silver , but doesn't matter anyway as I am LTG. Looking forward to trying GA longhaul again. Last time I flew with them was 37 years ago on a 747-100 . Feels good to be breaking the QF loyalty shackles. Will let you know how it goes

As I'm a Melburnian, this doesn't help me but I wanted to seek advice from everyone about aircraft doing DPS-MEL. I only need it one way as I'm flying into Jakarta. I really don't want to do an overnight in economy with QF so was going to do the JQ daytime flight in economy. Will I regret this?

If you need a direct flight on that route, I would do the Jetstar afternoon flight in economy over the overnight flight in Qantas economy on the 737. I don't like Jetstar at all, but the daytime option would do it for me in this case. And the 787 is only slightly more cramped (or perhaps even the same amount of cramped) than the 737. The service on Qantas would be much better though, and the QF flight is more likely to run on time.

Haven’t had a bad flight from MEL on GA. We made the decision a few years back to jump aboard GA and haven’t regretted it once.

Thanks all. I did look at Garuda, but for whatever reason it is substantially more expensive on the week I am looking at. I could do QF in business with points but it doesn't seem great use given the 737 business config (am using points to go up to JKT via Sydney). I will suck up Jetstar.

Hi Mr Gimlet,

It depends on how far out you book. When I initially compared QF, JQ, and GA back in October last year for travel in May GA in J was only about $80 more than QF but for the difference in standard thought it well worth it . You have to look for the Business Promo fare.

Cheers

Ah, my miscommunication here - I will be on holiday with Mrs_G and so its economy all the way.
