I apologise in advance for a potentially convoluted question - and I take this opportunity to say hi! too :D Long time lurker, first time poster.

My not- very- frequent flyer husband has convinced me that we should take an S class fare with CX on holiday ADL to FCO in October. Admittedly, it was a bargain price and a direct flight to Rome to boot but the CX condition is that, given it is such a cheap fare, no frequent flyer points are payable (had we gone a day later, that would have been a different story but our tight itinerary didn't allow us that luxury).

Does this ban on FF points extend to status credits? I don't really care so much about FF points but enjoy my QF Platinum status very much and currently need a few more credits before Feb to retain platinum. Also, does this prohibition on accumulating points extend to members of other FF memberships?

The Qantas website clearly says that S class fares accumulate at 'Discount Economy' rates.

Sorry if I sound like I'm trying to have my cake and eat it too with a cheap fare but it would be good to know in advance how I will be positioned going forward.

While I'm sounding like a spoiled brat, I am also a little nervous as this will be my first Y (or S!) flight in a while. Having tried CX's business class earlier this month and having been suitable impressed, I think I'll be taking it hard to progress to the back of the plane on my cheap as chips fare :D But as I'm obviously not willing to cough up the extra dough, I should not protest too much and remember how life really is when there is no corporate entity bankrolling the fare!

Hi bubbles, welcome to AFF. :D

If you refer to the QFF terms and conditions, you generally need to be able to earn points before you can earn SC's.

Frequent Flyer - About the Program - Terms & Conditions

Given that S doesn't show up as an eligible fare in the airline earning table, looks like it won't earn SCs. I sympathise, trying to earn elite qualifying miles/points on AA restricts me to very limited QF (and even fewer CX) fares.

I also symapthise with your other dilemma of going to the back of the bus knowing the fruits at the front, but fwiw, I don't mind CX economy at all - it's a strange seat, and I know some people dislike it with a passion, but I love the fact that the seatback is fixed so you're the only one who dictates how much/little personal space you have by how much/when you choose to recline - and in my opinion, there's enough room to be comfortable. :)

Basically , as far as CX flights go, if you look at the "Cathay Pacific Airways (CX)" part of the table indicated by djfuzz, you will see "Status Credits are earned on all eligible booking classes."

Since S is not listed it not an "eligible booking class".

Have you tried to ascertain how much it would cost you to upgrade to an eligible class? (Like V)

Thanks for all your kind responses and assistance.

I spent some time flailing around the QF terms and conditions but didn't really come up with much - thanks for your pointers Serty and for your sympathy djfuzz.

I don't really mind travelling economy as I know I'm one of the really lucky few to have experienced travelling J and I shouldn't take it for granted.

Plus, little more than a week ago, having had a mediocre experience in QF international J from London, I had to wonder whether I would feel like I had received good value for money had I bought the J ticket from my own funds.

I also sat next to a snorter on the long-haul leg over to Europe  (yes, like a camel!) but that's another story!

Cheers again!

im wondering how tall you are? ive never met nor heard anyone to enjoy CX seats... apart from those that are 4 foot nothing....

I have never sat in one of the new CX seats yet, the old ones i liked. Every aircraft that i have flown on with the new seats i have been lucky enough to be in F or J so only just looked back to see what they looked like and thats it.
I guess the day will happen soon enough. :-|

6 flat - I didn't have any knee issues, and tbh, I mind less the sliding forward and restricting space in front (at will) than I do being subject to the reclining whims of the person in front of me. To be fair, it was shorthaul though. :)

ahh well i can understand that being it a shorthaul flight. But try spending 22 hrs in those seats. They have to be bad for your back. Im 6'4 and after my trip from MEL - LHR i swore never again to board a plane with those seats. I had to go to a chiropractor for 2 weeks before my back was good again!
