Why does the website give such a lack of options when trying to book something?

I just went to check prices for a possible Tokyo trip in Jan. W fares.
Outbound gave me a number of options.
CBR-SYD-HND in either W or J, a number of options for the CBR-SYD. Also offered J options to NRT via MEL or BNE.

Return only gave me 1 option, no matter which date I looked at.
JL HND-SIN in Y, QF2 in W, dash 8 to CBR.
No attempt to up sell to J via MEL or BNE from NRT or the A330 HND-SYD QF60. No option of W (or J) on QF26.
Expert Flyer shows there is heaps of W seats on QF26 (and JL37 for that matter) for the dates I looked at.

Why is the website so... useless?

Many have asked the same question - frequently….

Have you tried multi-city?
Yes, that can provide more interesting options - even by forcing the required transit point.

Also, does Google flights present more options and will it preload that in QANTAS.com if you click through?

I don't think it provides more that you can click through to book on QF (OTAs yes). It just asks you to call Qantas to book the fares. I actually found a nice SYD <> TYO route that returns via SIN (on JL + QF) which is a fair bit cheaper and I happen to need to do some stuff in SIN too. That flight price combo would not show on Qantas no matter how you search even though it's QF all the way (codeshare JL).

That's my next option, once I'm doing something more detailed then quickly looking at fares.
Maybe use google if its something quick. Qantas only (if that's what you're after) and date grid for best pricing.

Qantas doesn't sell W inventory on the HND-SIN JL codeshares. Especially frustrating now that they're moving all the Japan routes to A330s in a few months.
Only one of the three JL TYO-SIN flights has W.
JL doesn't sell W on their QF2 codeshare either.

My last overseas trip I used google to find the flights I was looking for as the website was saying price at $6000 but if you added Alaska the price was just over $5100.
