So I'm off to Johannesburg from Cairns via Sydney in a couple of months and I was wondering if there were any options to upgrade an economy (O class)? I'm travelling with 2 other people who are Qantas staff/family who will be getting business class on stand-by so was looking for a cheap option to upgrade and join them.

Things that aren't in my favour is that I'm not signed up to Qantas FF but I am willing to pay some extra money (but not full fare) at check in etc. I read a little while back that you could ask at the counter at the airport if there were any special tickets available (can't remember the name now, it wasn't an upgrade it was a certain ticket type)??

If I sign up to Qantas FF before I purchase my airfare, what other avenues would I have?

And last question, as I'll check my baggage all the way through from Cairns to Sydney to Johannesburg, would that affect/increase my upgrade chances?

Sadly there are no options available, cash upgrades exist at ports only outside of Australia and QFF members would find the fare class no upgradable even if they had points.

I think you'll have to resign yourself to sitting in a different cabin, but of course they may end up sitting down the back with you if no business available unless they wait for the next fight.

Oh well that's disappointing but I'm not surprised. I got the travel agent to put a note on ticket anyway but I'm definitely not getting my hopes up now.
