Qf points redemption test in j

Two in my family want to go one way in J from the east coast of Australia from June 21st to LAX on QF points.
They dont need to be on the same plane but would prefer it.
Can you see any reasonable solution?
I saw thru Hong Kong but am I missing something?

My check gives MEL, SYD and BNE to LAX options in J for 2 adults all via HKG and all on CX. That ain't so bad, CX J are herringbone seats which are OK if you aren't too fat. Not great for talking to each other. Also, CX has quite nice J food and nice kits too. No PJs - BYO if you need to. Also, no directional air vents.

From SYD there is also an option for J or F which goes via PVG (SYD-PVG on QF, then PVG-LAX on AA), however in both cases the QF SYD-PVG leg is in Y (not J!). It is, however, cheaper than the options which go via HKG (although all ways are round-about ways on partner airlines, which means high points cost).

I'm not having any luck either side of 1 wk finding any direct flights, and all the ASAs are at bend-over prices.

Thanks for your thoughtful reply because I was hoping I was missing something.
My number one son only has QF points so it appears he is going to rat 114,750 SQ points off me times two rather than 43k plus 139k times two on QF out of PER using his stash.
The good parenting idea is he can pay his own fuel levies/fines and I cough up 229,500 SQ points.
Yes I know I have created a problem for myself long term so don't copy my mistakes.

What about any JASAs ex AKL?

Otherwise buy a cheapie ex Oz to Asia then use points ex Asia to LAX on OW partner airline to LAX.

Alternatively look at Oz to Asia on points then another redemption Asia to LAX & compare that to the cost of points for the whole journey Oz to LAX via Asia in case some anomaly makes it cheaper to do it as two separate tickets.

How are they coming back to Oz by the way?

I think I will have a further look at QF over this long weekend and I am certainly motivated to get him using his own stash of QF points.
For Perth people SQ has the A340-500 with 98 J seats that runs LAX-SIN with a 2.5 hour connection onto an A330 to PER ex SIN.
That looks likely if QF has nothing LAX to OZ in J.

If you did use SQ Kris Flyer points for your son he could maybe make a one off family donation of QF points from his account to yours to compensate you.

Otherwise you could get a JQ Y class redemption SYD/HNL on JQ3 Tue 21 Jun 1800/0745 & either:

a) Use minimum points of 36,000 then your son could pay the AUD431.71 in fees
or
b) Use maximum points of 78,361 but nil dollars

Then just buy a ticket via www.priceline.com HNL/LAX or they could always overnight in HNL then fly onto the West Coast the next day. They might need a bit of r & r after surviving whY for 10 hours!

Just looked at prices both one way & round trip ex HNL to LAX & it's ridiculous. By the time you add that to the AUD400.00 odd bucks in taxes for SYD/HNL you may as well have bought a one way ticket SYD/LAX!

Mrscove makes Platinum with QF on Thursday night so I will wait to see if the availability improves using her account.
We each have points in QF and SQ so buying a ticket would be an odd experience.
J tickets on a 21 day advance purchase are still quite a bit and a list price ticket is an awesome amount.
Your idea of a family transfer of points is pretty good but how can I introduce this concept to someone who is on the free list?

You could always adopt the 'take no prisoners' approach and tell him the honeymoon is over so which option would he prefer:

a) Use your SQ points & he can then donate some of his QF ones to you * or *

b) He can buy the cheapest Y QF that permits a points upgrade & try for a points
upgrade to J using his points (perhaps enquire on below thread re the likelihood of wlist clearing) * or *

Paying for J is too expensive IMHO so not really an option.

I think you could become my FF points manager Ozbeachbabe.
He is already off to London in about 2 weeks to see Manchester City play on my shout of SQ points. I toughened up and he is paying the fuel levies on this one.
I do have almost unlimited points in SQ and QF but his are only QF.
Maybe I should get him an SQ points credit card?

SQ won this one as my son used 102k of my Kris points compared with 139k of his QF points on Cathay ex SYD.
I did make him do the whole booking and he did it differently but came up with a good result. All I did was act as a coach so that was great.
It is obvious to me that there is a generational gap when we do things like this but hey that's just the way it is between a baby boomer and a 25 year old.

The worst bit is the younger son wanting me to play fair with equal numbers to him when he is ready to roll.
