QF Op-up 'Blacklist'

Funnily enough, although being on FlyerTalk for years, I've only recently discovered AFF so this is my first post.

Welcome to AFF FlyingProf. Glad to have you here and it is a very useful resource and community for all things QF and Oz in particular.

I don't believe in the existence of a 'black-list' (particularly after QFCSA's comments).

The closest I've come to an Op-up was a move into a Y exit row to replace a lady on crutches.

I also witnessed an AFFer travelling on the same flight as me get op-upped (opped-up?) on a MEL-BNE flight. Otherwise, nix, and I'm not expecting that to change anytime soon (I do not expect to fly in any cabin higher than what I've booked).

My 3 domestic op-ups were all CNS-SYD vs. All on oversold flights with room in J. One was after a misconnect which QF had to overnight me.

(I also had one 11 years ago MEL-BNE when I first joined QP, but I think that was the token bait and switch upgrade that is oft reported)

I would think that J to F op-ups would be extra rare simply due to the fact that they occur when cabins are oversold. And that usually only happens in Y.

So for those who never fly Y, I'm not surprised that you have rarely seen an op-up.

As a longtime WP have had only 1 op-up in international and 1 in domestic. all with full flights.

Only Op Up for me was many moons ago on JAL from NRT to SYD, on a connection from LAX.

None for me, I am reasonably successful with International points upgrade requests J -F although none so far on A380 :(

Also, I think the small size of the F cabin will have an effect as well.

Is that points upgrade or freebie? I've had 2/2 requests with points on the A380 but no freebies.

Ive probably had the same free upgrades as points upgrade. I find if I use points on one leg there is good chance I get a free one on the way home. This is the same with emirates - on a 4 leg trip, use points on 1 I generally get 1 more upgrade. This could just be luck??

There are no such 'lists'. Only the 'watch' list which is linked up with US DOTs list, and the i guess 'black' list where they are banned from travelling on the QF group. Which can include people who make false bomb threats, abusive to staff etc etc.

Interesting because a relative of mine was chatting to a FA at the end of a flight (he may have been in an exit row) and the FA said something along the lines of "you were better behaved than we were expecting". He was left with the distinct impression there was a comment in the manifest that he enjoys a drink on a flight.

Comments can be placed on the manifest by ground staff, but there is no database with pre-existing information to be placed with pax on flights. Possibly cabin-crew were told by ground staff to keep an eye on him or maybe cabin crew at first sight deemed that this pax may be a bit of a handfull.

But then again if he checked in with a person and was intoxicated then, the CSA shouldn't have allowed that pax to stay in an exit row.. Which is printed on pax boarding pass as NOEX.

No freebies at all. Have 2 from 3 J-F using points on B747 ( hopefully 3/4 in next few weeks) 0 from 4 on A380. I like to use my points for upgrades, v unwilling to rely on the upgrade gods at QF and as always happy to travel in the seat/class I paid for ;)

Interesting thread.

In my opinion, picking the right flights (full in your class and below* with space ahead of you) and having high status has a lot more to do with how frequently you get op-ups than any other factor.

I definately agree. My one and only op-up came last year in my last earning period, which ended last week :(. I got Y to Y+ LHR-HKG-MEL, standard you may think, however as an NB I was quite surprised.

I had been away on uni exchange for a year in UK and done some oneworld flying during that time, mostly BA Euro Traveller UK-Europe and BA World Traveller LHR-JFK rtn plus a few AA dom Y, yet hardly earned any SC's and nowhere near enough status to warrant an op-up LHR-HKG-MEL.
I was, and still am, QP however, so clearly that changes things. I would be interested to know where QP fits in? logically between NB and PS.

I agree dot, as QF30 was monday morning in March so maybe alot of UK/Aus expats/tourists/ backpackers heading back after festive season? Anyway for an NB QP to get and op-up it would be right to assume all of the Y pax (full 744 load) were either NB or no status?

Also, having done much more flying this year, mostly Y, I have a knack for getting exit rows and row 44 on the A332 SYD-MEL flight, 3 from 3.

And let's not get started on crew sitting in premium cabins and the 'coughy' attitude that is on display for all to see. I can understand crew needing to sit in premium cabins if they are heading to work but to sit in premium cabins going home is well wrong. I don't know about others but if I was paying top dollar to sit in business class I wouldn't want my flight spoiled by dead-heading crew who do not know how to behave outside of work hours. But I am getting off-track here....

Slightly OT now but I definitely have a bone to pick here, fuelled mostly by the stories I've read here and my own experiences, most recently in J ADL-MEL which I won't bore you with now. I've also witness a JQ steward in J recently on MEL-CBR, which most AFFers would know is not a JQ port so go figure!

Finally...
The only blacklist I have known is the one that stops you flying on the airline altogether. I know someone that was on that - and discovered they were on it at check-in

and queue the Curb Your Enthusiasm opening...

You do need to pick your flights, school holiday travel for instance, I have had 6 since the last 8 months, mostly ex DRW on a Friday flight although I got one to TSV on a Tuesday at 2.30PM which strangely was a popular flight!

I have had three op-upgrades (Y to J) out of MEL to AKL in the last 3 years. Just a pleb bronze QC fflyer.... upgraded each time at the check in counter with my wife (QC silver).

I never asked why, I did recall over hearing someone say it was due to change of aircraft. Maybe that is a common occurrence on the Tasman run.
