QF/Oneworld baggage tag consistency

This could just be me being a rookie, but the tagging of luggage on QF seemed inconsistent in that some flights I would get tagged First, others just Business.

I asked just then at in town checkin in HKG as Im on this evenings 98 connecting through to SYD. Usually I get First tag but this time it was only business. According to the checkin agent, the logic is that on a larger aircraft you get F and smaller you get J tag.

Contrasting this to CX, they always tag First Priority baggage even on Cathay Dragon which I really appreciate as it genuinely is off first rather than the 10000s of business luggage that gets lumped in with J and OWS.

Should OWE pax always get First?

QF tends to only tag First class if F is offered on the flight.
Not that it means anything to baggage handlers in MEL...I think they believe that F means first in last out!

My experience is that the aircraft type has determined the tag with QF. If it tops out at J then I've gotten J tags even as P1. I *think* once I got F tags at HKG.

Mrs 340 (Platinum) recently flew ADL-DXB-LGW on EK J and got F tags.

I love this on CX. I've always get F tags with them as QF Platinum or P1 and back in the day when I was CX Diamond, although the latter is a published benefit of CX Diamond of course.

I got F tags a week ago for QF98 connecting through to MEL, as a WP. In-town checkin also. Was booked in J, not that I'd expect that to make a difference.

I have never been tagged F on QF flight as a WP, however all of the flight I fly tops out at J class.

CX on the other hand always tag OWE the red first class tag.

If F isn't offered they probably don't have an F luggage bin.

Presumably Cathay tags it F but it just goes in an F/J bin.

I think AA tags first. However I don't know if it makes a real difference.
I have had bags tagged first and they were the last three bags on the conveyor in New York
Did think it was funny as all three came out at the end

HKG - Downtown & airport check in, always F tags no matter what aircraft
CX - F tags all the time going anywhere

The QF website is pretty clear about this - they will only use F tags when there is an F cabin:

Priority baggage on Qantas, regardless of your class of travel
Your bags are tagged Business on domestic flights and First on international flights on Qantas operated jet flights with a QF flight number on your ticket when a Business cabin (domestic) or a First cabin (international) is offered.

Given how poorly QF (or their contracted handlers) currently manage priority vs non-priority baggage, adding an additional tier of priority would probably make things even worse.

SYD - F check in always J tags even when flying A380/747/A330

F check in should use F tags when you're on an A380, except when operating a route where the F cabin is sold as J (e.g. HKG until earlier this year)

In CBR they always put a F tag on my flights if I'm connecting international - irrespective of airline/aircraft/class of travel. Cairns often does too. Pretty random everywhere else. I'm P1.

But they are largely meaningless. My bags come out when the handlers want. No sooner, no later.

The tags themselves aren't consistent (they are 'meant' to be similar across all airlines, but they aren't with at least 3 different basic designs for the priority tags).
The JL and CX priority tags are attached like the normal bag tags. I normally just keep them attached while the white checked bag tag comes off for the next flight.

I've had check in agents either, keep the existing priority tag and add another, keep the existing and not add a new one, and remove/replace.

Sometimes on international trips it is not possible to avoid checked bags (thanks liquids rules).

QF in WLG used to always put the First tags on even though all flights out of that port are 737s (was never connecting).

By contrast, when flying QF business class as BA Emerald SYD/HKG my bags were only tagged with an orange tag which only read Priority, not Business. You would think at the first check-in counters at their largest hub they might have got this sorted out...
