QF OLCI says I have to check in at a/port

Departing 1040 15 July QF CBR - MEL - SYD. Then, 16 July 1015 AA SYD-LAX etc the next day. Is this due to < 24 hours or some new fangled USA thing or the 2 airlines?

Usually I transit over 24 hours in SYD.

As a reward, AA forced me to go via MEL, but still hoping I can go straight CBR-SYD. .

So am hoping for fog and a rescheduling. As long as I get to SYD in time for a Christmas in July dinner.
