Hi team - I had to make a booking this morning and noticed for the first time an option to pay via PayPal :) At least when booking online it should be a way around those pesky surcharges when using a CC.

No surcharge for PayPal?

Just because PayPal does not mean no surcharge.

I paid my rego recently and there was a .04% charge for using PayPal.

Still would probably be a surcharge - also you'll lose out on earning extra points with Qantas.

Can't say for sure - but I didn't notice any additional surcharge being added. I didn't look too closely at the full amount when I booked I just looked the dollar cost ($74) and this was also what I was charged by PayPal. I don't seem to register part dollars!

No expert but I thought I would be earning points? PayPal seems to think so...

Oh and $73 not $74 as I originally thought! I really don't pay too much attention!

With paypal you earn normal points through your credit card. Whereas some credit card let you earn bonus points for spending with Qantas. With a payment service like paypal, you are using their merchant so any bonus points wouldn't be earnt.

Surcharge exists on PayPal payments ex AU and NZ but no surcharge on US and UK bookings. (worth noting no surcharge on CC ex UK/US either)

Can't use PP on bookings ex other regions.

Surcharge on ex AU bookings is better than CC fees but as mentioned above you're unlikely to get any QF bonus points when paying through PayPal, if your CC offers them.

Surcharge on ex NZ bookings is identical to paying with CC.

Similar to the bonus point scenario, some cards have lounge passes unlocked by QF spend which might not trigger when paying via PayPal.

Those in the know are aware of the ways around this, but I predict the average punter would assume that booking direct with QF and paying via PayPal should count as QF spend, and I'm somewhat inclined to agree. An example of how this is worded on the Qantas Amex Ultimate card:

Two complimentary Qantas Club lounge invitations each year after your first Card spend on selected Qantas products and services**

** Provided you are a Qantas Frequent Flyer and have registered your Qantas Frequent Flyer number with your Qantas American Express Ultimate Card, you are eligible to receive two Qantas Club Lounge Invitations each anniversary year of your Card Membership after purchasing selected Qantas products and services using your Qantas American Express Ultimate Card. Selected Qantas products and services means Qantas passenger flights purchased directly from Qantas.com.au with a QF flight number; Qantas Frequent Flyer and Qantas Club membership joining and/or annual fees. Subject to Qantas American Express Card Points Terms and Conditions. Within two weeks of purchasing selected Qantas products and services, you will receive an email from Qantas confirming the Qantas Club Lounge Invitations are available for use. Login to the Complimentary Invitations Portal using your Frequent Flyer details to access your invitation, link it with an eligible Qantas flight booking or find out more information. Qantas Club Lounge Invitations are valid for a single visit by one guest to a Qantas Club Lounge and must be used prior to their expiry. Invitations are subject to the Qantas Club Terms and Conditions and are not valid for Qantas International First Class Lounges, the Qantas Chairman’s Lounge, Qantas Domestic Business and or oneworld® alliance partner or associated lounges. Qantas Club Invitations cannot be carried forward to any subsequent year and must not be sold, they may only be transferred as allowed by Qantas. Invitations may be revoked or withheld if your Qantas American Express Ultimate Card account is not in good standing, if the selected Qantas products and services are refunded in full or if you have not complied with these Qantas Club Invitation Conditions, the Credit Card Terms and Conditions or the Qantas Club Lounge Access Terms and Conditions.

Could using PayPal impact on any credit card travel insurance?
Great question - my understanding is not for most Amex ( spend important not pathway for triggering a policy) but I bet some will be affected. Life is just like that

how do you guys see how much points you get per transaction? I have never come across a section on any of my cards / statements/ online account that seems to show that. I just get the total amount of points etc.

This varies between different card providers. But it is normally available online, rather than with the monthly statements.

For example, with AMEX once logged in on the right hand side of the screen is a heading 'total points earned' and when you click the link it shows a complete break down.

Ok thanks will take a look.

Paypal charge more in fees today, than any other credit card processing option.

First time in 17 years, our business has changed from Paypal to Stripe and started to surcharge paypal.

People choose paypal as they tend to have an easier experience in charging back should they be unhappy than a credit card.

I always suck up the cc surcharge for 2 reasons: 1 - the travel insurance that comes with my cc (even if I sometimes purchase separate travel insurance) and 2 (the more important) - I want the cc issuer to be on the hook if the airline goes bankrupt or does not deliver.
