Hi guys, has anyone noticed that the QF website is now routing MEL passengers through SYD -> SFO instead of LAX? Any reason for this bizzare change given that LAX is meant to be a One World hub?

Probably to get ppl flying their SYD-SFO route. Just because an airport is an alliance hub does not mean that an airline is forced to route people through it. Depending on the ultimate destination not routing someone through the hub frees up a seat for someone to take advantage of the hub.

Welcome aboard dr1337!

Last I looked the QF website gave you options to route via LAX or SFO. And while SFO isn't an AA hub, they do have a strong presence in the market so onward connections are still rather good.

It's been there since the SFO route started up again. The positive effect is so more passengers from other ports can connect without doing a 6am flight.

Why would you want to fly to SFO via LAX instead of SYD? That being said, you can still book it if you really want it.

Same reason they are selling PE fares from CBR and MEL-LAX via SYD on a date I've been looking at, but not selling any PE on the same flight if starting in SYD. It also puts a CBR-LAX via BNE at a higher value (cheaper, above SYD in the search results) then via SYD on the same date, and refuses to list CBR-MEL-LAX, even when it's selling MEL-LAX.

My preferred option !

Becareful what you wish for, the new TBIT is better, but SF is a better city.

I suspect the options being offered may depend on the final destination. Were you looking at flights to anywhere in particular?
