I have booked (not paid) for a J class trip from MEL to LAX which is via AKL. On the QF website, it is difficult to work out the type of plane and the type of J class it is as the seating map comes up with the error message. My concerns are that it is the VERY basic A330-200, and probably not the comfort of some of the others that have been promoted by QF. The flight number is QF25.
Has anyone done this flight and can tell me what the seating style is like in J class?

This shows up on Expert Flyer as 747-400 which is what I'd expect.

That's what I would have thought too, but I have just checked the QF site again and QF25 MEL-AKL-LAX still shows the A320-200. I think I'll have to keep watching it.
Thanks for the advice on EF.

Hi,

I think you'll find that some of QF25's will soon be operated on the new A330-200 which will have 36J (skybed) configuration. This starts next year (i think, not sure of the date). AFAIK these will be skybed mkI. I'm sure someone more knowelgeable will confirm/deny this shortly for you,

jakob.

There are no seat maps on the QF web site as yet for the (to be delivered) new 332's.

Current schedules indicate the 332 is to operate QF25 Sundays, Tuesdays & Fridays beginning Sunday March 2nd.

This changes somewhat with the end of Oz Daylight savings.

Having had a couple of flights on the existing QF Airbus with the 2-2-2 config and larger overhead bins I am actually preferring that to a 744at the moment. If you get the new new airbus then one would hope you have more reliable IFE.

This will be operated by a brand new A330-200 yet to be delivered to QF. It will be configured with 36 Skybeds in the J cabin, so not a bad way to travel trans-Pacific, and a very nice way to get between MEL and AKL.

What's going to happen with the 2-class 747-400 that currently operates QF25 at the moment?

Perhaps it could be deployed on PER-HKG or PER-NRT which are both still operated by 767!!

It will initially provide daily QF175/176 and some relief for the ongoing maintenance requirements for the fleet. Longer term it will help with the staged retirement of the 743 fleet.

It will be used to operate a daily BNE-LAX service. In order to operate daily BNE-LAX, extra aircraft had to be sourced from somewhere (in this case AKL-LAX). And as a bonus for Qantas, their yet-to-be-delivered A330-200s are able to operate AKL-LAX. Maintenance has nothing to do with the reason for the 747-400 being pulled off certain AKL-LAX services.

IMO, the use of 747-400 equipment on low-yielding routes such as PER-NRT would be a waste of resources (they are many more routes that need 744 capacity before PER-NRT). The 744 would be better utilised on routes such as PER/BNE-SIN, SYD-JNB (subject to QF getting those additional rights), extra SYD-LAX or SYD-NRT services. But none of this will happen because the freed up 744 capacity is being used to operate daily BNE-LAX from early 2008.

Bigmal, I'll see if I can get the new A330-200 (36J/201Y) seatmap for you. I am fairly positive will you get the current A330-300 Skybed seating, with the new international seat fabrics, curtains and carpets. You'll be lucky to be on such a lovely new aircraft.

Cheers
