LOL, AFF is nothing BUT social media..
I don't quite agree.

AFF is a bulletin board. It's a forum for like minded people. Sure people post photos and trip reports etc but it's not what the definition of social media has become today.

so what is the definition of social media? I thought it was an online community sharing information. If that’s not us I don’t know what is :)

Definition of SOCIAL MEDIA
Definition of social media
:forms of electronic communication (such as websites for social networking and microblogging) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content (such as videos)

Pretty clear cut to me.

AFF is an electronic bulletin board. A computer forum. It may well be similar to social media to you but I'm not convinced.

Twitter, Facebook, Linked In etc are Social media.

You could really say that Facebook, Twitter etc. exist because of the popularity of the original social media, online bulletin boards ;)

I think it is semantics :). We can “feel”. more mature and professional than the twitterati but I see no difference in what we do here and what I see on Facebook. Maybe better policing by our mods, when things spiral out of control, but that’s about it. Anyway if it makes you feel better about your posting addiction then that’s ok.:)

All that time lost. Can never get it back. ;)

I'm fine with semantics. I have been involved with AFF over 10 years and can see the usefullness of forums such as these. I have seen people use Twitter/Facebook etc. If people are comfortable labelling both as social media that's entirely up to them.

This site encourages participation by more than select users, in a many-to-many method, that is what makes it a social media site.
If the information flow was one way - such as a blog site (ie someones opinions and thoughts), or like most Corporate sites (providing information) then it wouldn't be classified as social media.
