Hi there

Planning to fly SYD - CPT - SYD in June on the following flights...

QF63 - 09:55 Sydney 16:15 Johannesburg Qantas flight
BA6431 18:00 Johannesburg 20:10 Cape Town British Airways flight operated by Comair Ltd

BA6416 - 14:00 Cape Town 16:00 Johannesburg British Airways flight operated by Comair Ltd
QF64 - 18:15 Johannesburg 14:15 (Wed) Sydney Qantas flight

I'm already booked on the above flights in paid Y and I want to use frequent flyer points to fly my son along... problem is I cannot get him on the same flights on the JNB-CTP-JNB legs (online booking engine won't allow it) so I was thinking to use miles to book him on SYD-JNB-SYD legs and then purchase online the BA tickets for the JNB-CTP-JNB legs (readily available and very cheap).

If I do this, do you think I will be able to interline his luggage & tickets and check him & luggage in from SYD all the way to CTP and back? This should be a no-brainer if the flights were on BA metal but as they are operated by Comair Ltd I'm not so sure...

Why not just check in under your details the luggage, and buy a separate ticket for your son?

I would als osuspect you would need to collect all bags at JNB to clear customs before the domestic flight to CPT, so it mightn't make any difference if the bags are interlined or not.

This is correct - we flew QF SYD-JHB in June and then com air JHB- Durban. Immigration and customs clearing is done in JHB and you have to pick up bags and then checkin again. It was fairly painless as international and domestic under one roof. Pick up bags and walk out and then take escalator upstairs to com air and check in again.

All good in theory as long as the combined luggage for both pax doesn't exceed the allowance for the single pax whose name the bags are under.

Comair is a oneworld affiliate (like Dragonair and QantasLink) so wouldn't that give access?

In that case I would expect lounge access given affiliates offer the full one world experience per se!

Thank you :)

I guess we will also be able to use the BA lounges in JNB & CPT as QF Gold?
Comair have their own lounges called SLOW lounges - the one in JHB had very nice food, albeit crowded. I just checked the access rules and you would be able to access them as a one world sapphire and also with a QF club card - not sure how much longer that one will last!

Awesome - do you know if the SLOW lounge in JBH also has showers?

I would use the BA lounge at JNB, which does have showers.
Is there a BA lounge for domestic? Their lounges are very nice, but I thought they were on the international side only. Mind you I was very tired when we arrived, so could have passed a doz lounges and not noticed, on my way to the SLOW lounge:) I was under the impression that the SLOW lounge served as BA domestic lounge, given that comair handles all BA domestic in ZA.

Ahhh, yes. You may be correct about no BA lounge in the domestic terminal. I think I've only ever been in the international terminal.

Every time I've flown BA in Sth Africa I have used the BA lounges - internationally and domestically. I'm pretty sure there are showers in them all too. I has been 2 years since I was there last but never had an issue.
