Can anyone tell me the total of frequent flyer points held by members, some colleagues have told me the number is in the billions, others have said it is less than 500 million points. Does anyone have a more realistic figure.

Regards,

Michael

Michael1515,

Welcome to AFF. :D

I have no idea of the answer but I am sure it is well in excess of 500 million points as I'm sure that the members here would probably pull that together between them.

Considering that QF claim they have 7 million members, and that each member needs to travel a minimum of 4 segments per year, and keep in mind that the minimum earn is 1,000 per flight, you'd be looking at in the billions for that alone (28 billion points based on every member doing the minimum), without counting the fact that you really need 8,000 points to actually start doing anything.

Remember than an individual point is not really worth a lot. So 500 million might seem like a lot, in reality, given the average price of a point is 2c, it would mean that the whole scheme would only have a value of $10 million.

Edit: Strangly enough, if you devide 28 billion by 2c, you end up with $560 million. So they may have been talking dollars worth of the scheme.

You don't even have to fly at all. I dare say that 7 million includes a numbr of inactive members, a number collecting small amounts from woolworts and so on.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

When the QFF program was being looked at as a separate entity for floating, various analysts suggested Qantas had made a provision at the time for $2B worth of future redemptions based on the points being held in members accounts at the time, given they contributed $157M to the latest results its a big number in total when it comes to points.

, you'd be looking at in the trillions for that alone (28 billion points based on every member doing the minimum), without counting the fact that you really need 8,000 points to actually start doing anything.
Trillions or 28 billion :p ;)

Taking your 2 cents per point and that the program has been valued at about $1 to $1.5 billion in the past, then maybe 60 billion points. I guess if I could be bothered to check the qantas annual report that might be a better basis for a guess.

Sorry, updated it to say billions...

And oz_mark, the wollies \ QF alliance has only been around a short amount of time, also quite a few members would have very large numbers of points. It doesn't take much to take points balances into the 10,000's, One return trans-pac flight will do it. So that would help push the average number of point per member up.

You need to balance that against quite a few members having received only a handful of points from it (if any)

The question is how many people are actually frequent flyers of that seven million plus members? I'd be surprised if more than 100 000 people did four flights a year or more. Most people would be lucky to fly more than one return trip in a year and that's likely to be on the LCCs.

I guess you need to distinguish between people getting points from flying (bum in seat) and all the other ways to earn. Non-flying points would be considerable.

There would easily be 1000 people with one million points out there so there's the first billion!

There are 4M passengers on domestic flights each month, if we say 50% are on a QF FF earner then thats 2M x 1000 pts per month.

Hi all,

I have >1M and from previous threads some members here have >3M points.

I would assume the number would be in the 100's of billions.
