QF Engineers set to strike !

IMHO, %%%'s are not important - what many of the LAMES are looking at in reality is either:
  1. 103% of their current wage/salary, or
  2. 0% of the same + redundancy
It seems the union leaders have cornered themselves and are willing to risk not having anyone to represent rather than accept the reailities of life.

Yep, I think they're *engineering* themselves out of a job. Who can they blame? Their union leaders who are happily leading them down that path while showing much bravado. Yep, the same union who has lost the public perception test.

Being a tunnel-visioned "hard-cough" will only cut it for so long; once it's worn thin, people realize that you're just a tired, lame, one-trick pony.

I'm sure he doesn't give a rats - he's out of there either as soon as August or early in the New Year - the NY Board meeting included job interviews for potential CEOs (probably why they were in NY in the first place) - although inside promotion may be possible from existing executive.

Someone else is going to have to clean up his mess for him whilst he "retires" no doubt with an enormous pay out of some sort...(probably Deathstar will become become Deadstar soon enough) :D

The union has a number of options - each carries a degree of risk and you have identified that quite clearly for the case of withdrawing labour at this time. But the same applies to QF management - if they go overseas for major maintenance work and there's a hull loss they are going to look very stupid! If they reduce Aussie jobs they may lose Fed Gov favouritism.

The union is as obsessed with protecting the pay of its members as QF Management is in trying to protect short term profit.

Waging war against your employees eventually becomes a no win situation for both sides.

And if aviation adjusts to higher fuel costs and grows at anywhere near the estimates proffered by the aircraft manufacturers highly skilled workers including both pilots and engineers may become a premium skills resource. Chucking out core capability may not be that smart in the medium to long term. The outsourcing model has its benefits, but time has shown these have been way over-sold!!! One problem is defining and auditing quality control (anyone who works in an office with outsource IT support or has dealt with an outsource call centre knows this only too well!).

Good luck to them. I wouldn't like it to be me.

Colleen Barrett from Southwest is about the only one from the current crop of American/Canadian airline CEOs who are any good at it.

We can only hope so :!:
Pffft :p some hope that Qantas Domestic disappears and we are left with - Cityflyer, QLink & Jetstar. (After all Qantas never use to be a domestic airline!)

ALSO - I call for JQ to compete against the precious QF on Cityflyer routes - unencumbered by "Mascot's" restrictions... (Probably will once TT expands a little more.)

Call me slow BUT could you elaborate a little as to your reasoning and logic :?: :shock:

It is just getting too expensive to fly QF :(

However, I don't begrudge those out there who do & want to to continue to do so. (I still do, from time to time.)

We are back to the good ole days.Private schools in Qld went on vacation last week, public schools today. It is deja vu time.Holidays and strikes go together like a horse and carriage.

OK, I now understand though I don't really agree.

Airfares are still much cheaper than they were under the duopoly and are currently escalating due the cost of Jet A1 being $165+ a barrel. The QF domestic fares are often cheaper than DJ and they provide each other with some reasonable though not totally direct competition.

The entry of others such as TT in their current mode is not sustainable long term and can/will only continue so long as SQ continues pouring in the $$$$'s.

This is of course said from a business perspective and not from a passengers perspective.

From the passenger perspective what we all want is full and perfect service including looking after passenger when flights are delayed and all at the prices offered by TT.

It's not going to happen any time soon :!: :(

And the Perth walk-out scheduled for 1pm through 1am on a Friday! I hope there are not too many parents hoping to get home in time to do things with their families on the weekend. I can see a lot of dads (and mums I expect too) missing their kids sporting and other activities this weekend because they are stuck in Perth waiting for teh next available flight.

With the QF track record for late departures X PER of late the engineers may not have to do anything at all.

It doesn't matter, remember its the "bloody unions" so it must be their fault!!!

Qantas management have apparently instructed flight crew to blame the engineers for any delays, whether or not of their making...the QF propaganda machine is in high gear...

Well maybe QF management should exit their ivory tower in Mascot and start talking through a resolution with their staff.

Incidentally, Geoff Dixon apparently (if you believe the Cairns Post) stood the QLD Premier up at the last minute earlier this week by cancelling a scheduled meeting about future plans for QF brand in QLD (after the Cairns debacle).

Arrogant **&%$*!!!

Haha, and the LAMEs only stood up probably 5000 pax this week forcing them to change their travel plans at the last minute. Who's more important? One premier of Queensland, or 5000 pax?

Yes you're right, it is laughable :D....especially since Dixon won't talk to the engineers so presumably is happy twiddling his thumbs BUT if he is seen out and about on daily business it wouldn't help the Qantas propaganda machine at all.

In case you hadn't noticed Qantas is becoming a joke and that's from the top down. Their product messages are confused, their branding is confused, their workplace relations are atrocious, they are making decisions on the fly on which cities to dump, they can't distinguish a good from a bad deal, their PR messages no longer have any credibility, Dixon has cried the sob story many times too often....they are on the edge and going down fast..the panic is setting in and no wonder they are desperately scouting for a new CEO, even if it means the cost of tripping the whole board over to NYC...

PER engineers called off their stoppage. The "West Australian" reports that "association officials said they were having trouble finding a venue for their stop work meeting. ALAEA national Secretary Steve Purninas later confirmed engineers in Perth had decided not to strike as 'there are broken aircraft that are more important to fix'"

Wet here yesterday so they obviously needed an indoor venue. If you have to cancel, why not put the best light on it?

Not sure whether it's entirely strike related, or perhaps a flow on effect of the strikes - im currently sitting in the QP awaiting a delayed QF25. Something to do with a defective circuit breaker in the food chiller. The engineers are still onboard the plane fixing it.

Meanwhile I'm on to our 2nd bottle of pinot with my new drinking buddy who I'd just met at the gate and invited into the QP. :)

So can anyone tell me what the latest is for this week (30 June). I can't find anything news on it today, and my wife flys out of Sydney domestic tomorrow. Perhaps we should plan to have breakfast, lunch and dinner in the lounge.

Qantas engineers' talks postponed | The Courier-Mail

PAY dispute talks which were to resume today between Qantas and engineers have been postponed until Wednesday, the airline says.
A Qantas spokeswoman confirmed the meeting to try to resolve the standoff was simply rescheduled.

Doesn't seem to be any current strike action. I assume they didn't give the required 2 days notice (thinking that they'd be at the bargaining table today), hence can't legally strike. There may be a bit of carry-on from left over maintenance though that is still affecting flights.
