Qantas and Emirates today unveiled details of benefits that will be available to frequent flyers through their proposed partnership.
The partnership, which remains subject to regulatory approval, is designed to offer customers a seamless travel experience across one of the world’s largest networks.
Some of the key benefits that Qantas Frequent Flyer and Emirates Skywards members will be able to access for travel from 31 March 2013 are:
- Earn Qantas Frequent Flyer points or Emirates Skywards Miles on Emirates and Qantas flights (with some exceptions for Emirates Skywards members on the Qantas domestic network).
- An expanded network for members of each program to earn Qantas Status credits and Status bonus or Skywards Tier Miles and Tier bonus.
- Redeem points/Miles on any part of the Qantas or Emirates network – a combined total of more than 175 destinations worldwide.
- Access to both Qantas and Emirates lounges for Gold members (or above) of either program in Australia, Europe, Asia, the Middle East and North Africa.
- Have their tier status in either program recognised with both airlines when flying on the joint Qantas-Emirates network (where available).
Chief Executive of Qantas Loyalty, Lesley Grant, said the benefits announced today would give frequent flyers of either airline the opportunity to earn and redeem points or Miles across a massive network.
“Our shared goal has been to offer Qantas and Emirates customers the best global network, flying the largest combined A380 fleet and supported by the best rewards for our frequent flyers,” said Ms Grant.
“Both airlines already offer some of the highest quality travel experiences, including our lounges and loyalty benefits, so this is about bringing together the best of both worlds,” she added.
Thierry Antinori, Emirates’ Executive Vice President, Passenger Sales Worldwide said: ”It is an exciting time to be an Emirates Skywards member, yesterday we announced Platinum – our new tier, which has been developed to enhance the travel experience for frequent travellers and to offer additional benefits to Emirates Skywards members who have earned over 150,000 Tier Miles in a year.
“Now today we are unveiling the wide range of benefits that our members can enjoy as part of the Emirates and Qantas partnership,” added Mr Antinori.
Emirates and Qantas have also announced their shared baggage policy on certain routes for travel from 31 March 2013. To enable a more seamless experience as customers travel on the joint network, Qantas will move from a piece and weight system, to a weight system, for all international flights – excluding those to/from the Americas. As part of this alignment, Emirates will increase its pre-purchase excess baggage discount to 30 per cent
Eligible Qantas Frequent Flyers, Qantas Club members and Skywards members will enjoy additional allowances when travelling across the joint network.

More detail on the benefits available to Qantas Frequent Flyer and Emirates Skywards Members, as well as eligibility criteria, are outlined in the facts below.

Baggage Policy
- To enable a more seamless experience as customers travel on the joint network, Qantas will move from a piece and weight system, to a weight system, for all international flights – excluding those to/from the Americas. Sounds like what I was expecting really e.g. no upgrades on EK using QF points. Lounge access is as expected.

Good to see a nice fluffy addition of 'Chauffeur Drive' - from my recollection this is a new benefit for Qantas.

Not sure about the baggage policy - maybe some of the QF sages here can comment on if this is an enhancement or a 'enhancement'

I hate to keep complaining about the PER situation, but now that EK is handling the connection to DXB from PER, it seems like a massive degradation of benefits for PER pax. No upgrades, horrendous overweight fees, reduced luggage allowance. Not to mention 10 abreast in Y.

What ever happened to "we've agreed to make the higher benefit our standard"?

Baggage is a potential improvement with the move back to a weight system. (Remember that discussion?) I can't really read the posted baggage allowances using the phone app.

Chauffeur Drive was announced when the tie up was announced as it was to match the service provided by EK.

Re the baggage allowance - this is a tricky one. I think I prefer a weight based system as it is sometimes easier to have more bags.

On my upcoming trip (booked prior to this) my allowance will be (in J):

Me - (WP) - 3 x 32KG
Mrs - (PS) 3 x 32KG
Boy - (NB) 3 x 32KG

So all up nine bags for a whopping 288KG

Now it would be

Me - 60KG
Mrs - 52KG
Boy - 40KG

Total 152KG

So a drop of 130KG! However more bags allowed...

The big thing for me though is that I will get the QF limit on my EK flight I have yet to book.

Frequent Flyer - About the Program - Terms & Conditions
Note that 'status credits are earned' note is missing, so no SC on EK flight numbers (to be expected). Not a bad points earn rate though.

Like the 42kg for silver FF although to be honest, the piece system is far less annoying and costly to PAX I find. Good for that second bag of shopping from Asia though. If you can get on a QF flight.................

Lounge access- For travel from 31 March 2013 Platinum One, Platinum and Gold Qantas Frequent Flyers will have access to the Emirates lounges where available across Australia, Europe, Asia, North Africa and the Middle East.

This! 100% this. So where are the naysayer stating the WP will not be allowed in the F lounge?

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

This! 100% this. So where are the naysayer stating the WP will not be allowed in the F lounge?

Dwelling in their never-ending pessimism and negativity ??

That's exactly the problem when people just make things up - they look stupid when the real details are announced!

Sounds like what I was expecting really e.g. no upgrades on EK using QF points. Lounge access is as expected.

The wording is a bit unclear.. it only says:

- Qantas Frequent Flyers cannot use their points to upgrade when booked on the Emirates flight number on Qantas operated aircraft

Which doesn't say you can't upgrade on EK metal on either an EK or QF number. Unless i missed another part?

Correct, no upgrades on EK - but you can get Classic Awards on EK metal, which is a bonus.

Re the upgrades, bein pedantic it doesn't actually say no upgrades on EK. It says no upgrades on EK flight numbers operated by Qantas. It is silent about EK on EK metal. However, I expect that there are no upgrades for EK on EK metal.

In Dubai, Platinum One and Platinum Frequent Flyers will have access to the Emirates First Lounges and Gold Frequent Flyers will have access to the Emirates Business Lounges.

This! 100% this. So where are the naysayer stating the WP will not be allowed in the F lounge?

I'm thrilled to have been proven wrong on this. Having spent about three hours in the EK F lounge in DXB in January (post 10, I was sure Qantas Platinums would not be welcome. This is very, very pleasing.

Baggage Allowances . . .

With the new Emerald baggage allowance a WP would presumably get 20kgs on top of the 50kgs in Y.

Dwelling in their never-ending pessimism and negativity ??

In was conjecture rather than stated fact.

Nothing wrong with conjecture and it helps discussion, who knows where that discussion is heeded if at all, but a look at the members who read the thread makes of interesting reading in itself, even if most were laughing at the prospect.

Lounge access
- Reciprocal lounge access is not permitted for the Americas, New Zealand or South Africa.
Does this mean reciprocal access in Australia - less relevant for SYD, MEL (at least for Plats), but potentially better for PER, BNE

- Qantas Club members can continue to access the Qantas lounges across the Qantas network as well as the Emirates Business Lounge in Dubai and the American Airlines Admirals Club in London when flying Qantas or Emirates between Australia, Dubai and London
Good to see that Qantas Club members are being looked after whether on QF or EK.
Interesting that AA has come to the party in LHR - I wonder if this signals BA closing its T3 lounges ??

Re the upgrades, bein pedantic it doesn't actually say no upgrades on EK. It says no upgrades on EK flight numbers operated by Qantas. It is silent about EK on EK metal. However, I expect that there are no upgrades for EK on EK metal.
I agree (unfortunately)

In was conjecture rather than stated fact..
Some would call it scaremongering rather than conjecture (conjecture normally has some basis for the statement)
