Some funny results on QF codeshares on EK metal.

Was search for SYD-KUL flights for March next year.

SYD-KUL provides mostly QF metal to SIN with connections on 3K (mostly QF codeshare, but some on 3K) or (surprisingly) on MH. But also shows options via CGK and BNE/SIN and MEL/SIN (i.e. 2-stops) (all for roughly +/- $100 the same price).

Yet it never shows QF to MEL, then QF/EK direct to KUL.

If you search MEL-KUL it actually comes up as the 2nd entry, behind a QF to SIN then MH to KUL.

Would this be a restriction on the codeshare, or just QF favouring their metal by a long stretch.

Maybe a bit of this, but I suspect it has more to do with the departure time of the MEL-KUL service (currently departs 3:35am) making it a very longggggg connection time from the last SYD-MEL domestic arrival.
You could try the Multi-city tool if you really wanted to book this service.

I did this (Syd-Mel on qf then mel-kul on ek) at the start of a (very cheap) bestflights itinerary a couple of years ago. One of the problems was that the QC was closed and you couldn't check into the ek flight in Mel until after midnight to access the EK lounge. I was on separate tickets so might be avoided if you can check through to Kul at first airport

I've done the SYD-MEL QF 10pm-11:30pm, connected to QF codeshare EK MEL-KUL service twice in the last 18 mths. This itinerary much more likely to show up on TA sites such as Expedia.

A great way for me to work all day and avoid a night in a hotel for a quick long weekend getaway to Asia.

Exactly why I was looking at this service, albeit forgot about check in issues

There shouldn't be any checkin issue. You can get your EK boarding pass at the QF international connections/special services counter in SYD.

It's displayed for me when I searched SYD-KUL, but maybe its inconsistent.

Can't you online check in and print out boarding pass, then just show passport for validation?
If on/even on separate bookings if SYD - MEL arr MEL at 20.30 or so when EK checkin opens?
