Hey all,

After going down a bit of a rabbit hole researching this, wanted to get some thoughts from the brains trust here.

We're booked on QF8417 SYD→DXB on 3 July, connecting QF8073 DXB→CDG on 4 July, then returning QF8078 NCE→DXB on 29 July and QF8414 DXB→SYD on 30 July. All economy, all QF-coded on Emirates metal, booked through Qantas.

Flights haven't been formally cancelled, but i'm not feeling great about waiting until it's cancelled just before. Also aware its a codeshare so want to hedge against a last-minute communication mixup. We're weighing up whether to sit tight or act.

A few things giving us pause:
  • Smartraveller's "do not travel" advice covers UAE transits, and Qantas has published this on their own travel updates page, feels like that should give us some grounds for a fee-free change even without a formal cancellation trigger?
  • The current Qantas waiver for codeshare flights only covers travel up to 30 June but our entire trip is in July so we fall completely outside it as it stands
  • We'd ideally stay on QF metal or at least keep travel oneworld the return from Nice (NCE) is the tricky bit as there's no direct Asian hub option from there
Anyone had any luck or advice on what to do in this situation?

Also keen to hear if anyone has successfully used the Smartraveller argument to get a proactive fee-free change on uncancelled July flights since everything I've found here so far seems to be people who waited for the formal cancellation first.

Cheers

Unfortunately, as you note, the waiver has not been extended to July, but it still looks very dicey going through the Middle East. I'd expect the waiver to be extended soon though so I'd wait until it was.

While flying out of NCE would be, well, nice, I'd be looking to book backup flights from anywhere nearby (on points if possible due to the low cancellation costs, but flex if not).

https://www.qantas.com/agencyconnect/au/en/agency-news/march-2026/airspace-closure.html is the full commercial policy. You'll note that the options are book new dates on EK, get a fare credit if booking away from EK or refund. EK is still operating services, so they're now unlikely to book you onto another airline. If you wait until close in the fares are likely to be significantly higher than the ~$2.7k MH and TG are charging for return MEL-CDG tickets.
