I have a flight coming up next month from SYD - HKG paying with cash together with another award booking using Qantas points on CX to NRT

Will check in staff at SYD allow me to check my bag all the way to NRT or i need to clear custom at HKG and re-check my bag , both booking is with Qantas .

I think Qantas - Qantas is fine.

But anyway, I think there is an exemption if one of the tickets is an award booking - but I can't seem to find that evidence.

I know you can still get bags connected on separate AA tickets (AA to AA). I believe the changes were mostly due airline liability, and if it's the same airline that's not an issue.

You won't get the bag checked in all the way given separate tickets. Apparently the exception (combination of QF cash ticket + award) no longer holds.

You can get your bag re-tagged airside in HKG at the transfer desk (no need to clear immigration).

Sorry I misread your post - it's obviously not two Qantas flights. And if the award booked exemption has been removed, then no, you've got no chance.

Must say its what we do get a QF paid flight to HKG then "direct: out of there to a swag of USA and Europe destinations where J seats are plentiful for two of us, unlike QF and fees are near zilch.

I have transited HKG twice since QF stopped checking bags through.

Each time I rocked up to the transit desk and the airline reps went and found my bags and checked them through.

This happened with EVA Airlines in J and Emirates in F (award ticket)

Bit risky but it worked!

Thank you all for sharing your experience , so when check in at SYD they will only send the bag to HKG . Look like i will have to talk to CX transfer deck to rechecked my bag . Trying to avoid clear immigration and check-in again . I have 3 hours in HKG

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

My advice would be go straight to the transfer desk.

Check in and they will soon tell you what will happen with your luggage.

Have a great trip

The exemption is still up on the QF website, albeit somewhat ambiguous.
But, as others have said, the transfer desk should be able to take care of it.

Good find!

Why I said the OW award exception may no longer be in force is the following (post 63 onwards).

Would be good if someone could print off this exception and bring it to the counter to test them! I for one, want it to remain!
QF- no checking of luggage separate itineraries from 1 Sep [2016 some exceptions] - Page 5 - FlyerTalk Forums

OP: if this policy was still in force, you should be able to get your luggage and BP all fixed in SYD (no need to do so in HKG)

If you have enough time then the transfer desk option will get you out of trouble. I use the transfer desks quite a lot with connections from different carriers on different PNRs.

I wrote to QF to get clarification, this is what I got

I wrote back again to ask them to clarify what the specific exception is

++++++++++++

Since the 1st of September 2016 Qantas has no longer provided passengers with a through check to another oneworld operated flight if they are travelling on two separate tickets. Passengers connecting from Qantas to another oneworld operated flight booked on the same eTicket within the same itinerary will be provided with a boarding pass for their onwards flight and any checked in baggage will be through checked to their final destination.

If passengers are booked to travel Melbourne to Sydney with Qantas on one eTicket and Sydney to Singapore with British Airways on another eTicket, they will be required to re-collect any checked in luggage upon arrival into Sydney and re-check in for their onwards flight with British Airways directly.

I hope this helps.

I thought i would report back my exp . Qantas check in team at SYD have done an amazing job check out bags all the way through and even providing 2nd boarding pass on connecting CX flight at HKG . He said only because our second flight booked using Qantas points couldnt have done so if paid cash with CX not sure what the different .

He even blocked one seat to gave our family of 3 all 4 middle seat for extra room . However the A330 economy seat is not the best seat i found CX Y seat much more confortable
