Hey quick question for the experts. I have a CX award booking in a couple of months booked through QFF.

If the CX flights are cancelled or we are still unable to fly via HKG, will QF reroute us or do they simply wipe their hands and refund the award ticket leaving us to find something else last minute?

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks

I had a CX flight canceled as a QF award booking like yourself. I was contacted by QF advising the flight had been cancelled and to contact them. My online itinerary had been changed and I needed to contact them to confirm I was happy with the change. It was a pain dealing with QF. First they said we can’t help contact CX. I contacted CX and they said we have sorted it out and QF just needed to approve itinerary on my booking. It took 3 chats over a week to get someone to finally just approve the new flights.

CX were on the ball and had sorted it all out, it was QF that we’re hopeless telling me sorry no flights you might have to find something yourself. I pushed back and all a sudden the itinerary was updated.

It will usually be Cathay that will put you a automatically onto another flight. That will most likely be a ‘computer selected’ alternative and may not match up with the rest of your itinerary. If there are award seats in other flights, easy to change with a call to qantas.

But if there aren’t seats available, there are two outcomes at that point. Either the Qantas oneworld liaison desk speaks to Cathay and they open up seats on a better flight for you, or Qantas puts it into the ‘too hard’ basket and only offers you a refund. Qantas can’t force other airlines to open up award seats, but Cathay is usually pretty good at re-accommodating. So hopefully you get an agent that will send it off to oneworld liaison.

QF won't help you in those scenarios. You'll need to try find alternate reward seats. Emirates often release last minute seats, if that helps!

In theory agree. But it doesn’t always work that way.

There are two camps here… some airlines refer you back to the issuing carrier and refuse to touch the booking. Others will proactively add a new flight and refer you back to the issuing carrier to reissue the ticket.

CX is generally in the former camp. But a recent cancellation by QF on the SFO route they refused to assist or even add a new segment into the booking. The issuing carrier offered to refer it to the oneworld desk but given the strain on QF due to covid advised it would be easier to change my itinerary.
