I have booked MEL - CNS on QF5946. Since I have a QF flight number, can I just waltz in to MEL and check my luggage in as per normal at the QF counters or do I need to line up and check in at the JQ counters? :(

I guess my concern is will my luggage get across from the QF check in to the JQ plane?

Many thanks

AFAIK QF do not interline with JQ, so you would need to go to the JQ counters.

As JQ are the operating carrier, it is likely that you will need to check in at the JQ counters.

As per most codeshares, you will need to check in with the operating carrier.

As the advice has been, you will need to check in with JQ

JQ metal = JQ checkin.

JQ use the Navitaire checkin system whereas QF use Altea (Amadeus) so it is not physically possible for QF to check you in as your operating flight JQ946 is hosted in Navitaire.

Note than you can't use the QF Amadeus pnr to do OLCI with JQ or at JQ kiosks at the airport however if you call QF ask them for your 'JQ confo number' which which appear somewhere in the QF pnr.

The JQ confo number is the JQ pnr so can be used for JQ OLCI or at the airport kiosks.

This allows JQ to charge their huge excess baggage rates. Today, we found this out on a SYD/MEL codeshare flight. Qantas domestic (flying on their planes) have been charging a flat $30 excess baggage rate up to 32kg for their own aircraft. We had accidentally (perhaps unknowingly) booked a JQ codeshare via the QF website. We found out that it was a codeshare when we were not able to check in online. At the checkin counter, JQ charged $135 for excess baggage on a like basis. The JQ & QF flights were quoted at exactly cost. Given that all the costs for QF and JQ (codeshare) via QF website are exactly the same, how can they justify their "discount airline" argument which they so forcibly put up today?

So i'm assuming you made the booking using your points under the classic award?

That's strange!

I had believed if one booked a QF*HQ code share, you received QF's baggage policies.

According to our experience today, JQ will allow QF's 23kg limit but charge $15 for each kg above that. Makes Australia Posts Express Post look cheap! QF baggage excess policy currently charges $30 for excess baggage between 23kg and maximum of 32kgs per bag.

Yes, unfortunately my research indicates that is the case for domestic flights.

While QF*JQ does allow "1 Piece" at 23Kg domestically, that's it - after that it is indeed $15 per kg. Spare a thought for those who book through JQ directly and have a 15Kg allowance.

Of course, JQ do allow a carry on bag up to 10kg.

Another reason to avoid codeshares ... or Jestar if another carrier will do.

The QF allowance you quote is not correct. When travelling on QF metal you are allowed one piece up to 23 kg. There is a heavy charge of $20 if that bag is 24 to 32 kg.

If you had an additional bag as excess baggage & pay for this at the airport this will cost you $30 as long as it doesn' t exceed 23 kgs or the $20 heavy charge will be levied.

These allowances are bases on no status with QF or ff bronze (NB).

This policy was effective 01 June 2011. Prior to that any excess over 23 kg was charged at $10 per kilo.

..
Methinks baef47 would have happily paid your $20 or his $30 as a QF fee rather than the $135 JQ charged ....

Thank you ozbeachbabe for clarifying that. I now recall paying the $20 on a SYD/MEL flight with QF for a bag weighing about the same. The $30 came from a quick look at the QF website.
