Did anyone see the trial of the automated boarding gate in T3 QF SYD domestic?

Can’t wait for this to reject all the group 5’s trying to board as group 1

future proofing. These look like the ones that use biometric at HKG for example. Whilst not in use in Australia yet, I can see this being used in the future - like register your biometrics and just scan face rather than scan QR.

Curiously though, Oz is one of the very places in the world that you can rock up to a flight and not show ID.

Who knows how many peeps have flown on someone else’s ticket over the years? I guess the days of getting someone else to actually fly your manic status run are number .

I hate those systems. Especially the system at HKG that forces you to see the video at security when it links your biometric scan to the boarding pass. Get rid of the screen and it might be an acceptable system.

Does it need to?

I recall using similar gates in HEL flying AY on a Schengen flight, I think it was just a dumb scanner that opened the gate like a metro fare gate.

I wonder what data set Qantas will have used to link faces to names and what else they do with the linked data such as lounge use shopping in the terminal etc. And then who they might sell that data and your image to.

Pretty sure the biometric boarding scanners at HKG run off the biometrics on your passport - not sure how this would work for Australian domestic departures when even Driving Licences aren't (yet) biometric.

Meanwhile ... the APO can't explain why my chip is suddenly not working on my Aussie Passport!!!

Have you had someone stamp it recently?

I had an over zealous agent at AMS stamp really hard and the PP refused to work on arrival back in SYD and then a subsequent trip out/back. I took it to the PP office expecting a free replacement - nope, had to pay for a replacement myself…

They do have this warning on the website…

Hasn't been stamped, is kept in my leather travel wallet when not actually being used, condition as brand new (which for a 2024 issue it should!). Have been told I need to take it into the APO to get it scanned by them ....

Don’t you just ring the MNL call centre and ask for the password so you can download the data yourself?
