Just published by QF Media, CEO Alan Joyce will be interviewed tonight on ABC's 7:30 report in respect of industrial issues involving the pilots.

Might be worth a watch for those who are interested.

Was interesting. Although I don't think Alan Joyce really understands the needs of the pilots. I understand his position on keeping Qantas profitable but foundation of Qantas is its staff.

Good interview - he is obviously being gaurded in what he says.

In saying that, everyone wants the pilots to do well but they have to be realistic. They were also against Jetstar - without it, the company as a whole may not be here. As unpopular as we think it is, the management have to make long term decisions for the future of the company, so all the unions need to understand that.

The problem is if the engineers get what they want, there is less of the 'pie' for the pilots, and then the next union that comes along. If they are more realistic and look at the long term, maybe the company will be more willing to negotiate.

Damn missed it. Can I watch this somewhere online?

The issue of int'l losing money is interesting - partially it is about how they allocate costs and revenue between business units. Any section of a business can be made to lose money or make money.

Is JQ profitable because it has a low cost base or because people fly a LCC thinking that they are supported by QF?

Mr Joyce didn't come across as being all that likeable in the interview, IMHO.
The guy who was representing the pilots (I forget his name) came across as a far more straightforward individual, and the points he made were quite valid.

I'm a self-confessed union hater - not least because I dislike the way unions and their officials behave, and working in the transport industry, there are very few situations in which I personally believe a strike is the answer. Admittedly though, if I ever became unhappy with my pay or conditions I'd talk with my feet and find an employer that met my expectations better.. I'd never participate in a strike, regardless of the reason/s for striking.

This is one of the few instances where I can understand the strike action - the staff have genuine concerns that need to be addressed. Sure, everyone understands the old profitability versus warm fuzzies argument, but surely Qantas' Aussie image is large part of the profitability of the whole brand? I'll admit that knowing there's an experienced Aussie pilot at the controls is part of what leads me to choose Qantas time and time again (and even on Cathay I'm always happy to hear an Australian accent over the PA from the coughpit). Perhaps it's irrational, but I'm sure I'm not alone in this sentiment. I think it might be time for a compromise - for the sake of the staff, the customers and the brand.

Agree. In the PR battle, first blood to the pilots. Joyce does come across as uncompromising, inflexible and provocative, even passively aggressive. I seriously reckon I'd be keeping Joyce out of the media on this issue.

Thanks for this. Alan Joyce is not an extremely good public speaker IMHO

Geoff Dixon was a good speaker. Would you prefer him at the helm?

(Note: I am definitely not a Joyce afficionado)

:confused:Could some one please explain how 2 free Y+ tickets per year and other perks will give pilots job security?

Sorry to answer my own question like a nerd at the front of the lecture theater:oops:

The free flights is in exchange of letting Qantas tell them when they can go on leave

Sorry again
