I also note it appears to be slower than the 747-300, taking an extra 15 or so minutes SYD-PER. I'd say this move is somewhat of a step backwards.

Fifteen extra minutes? On a five-hour trip? Eh, whatever. Give me a quiet, efficient new 330 any day over a creaky, noisy, pollutin' 743. The 747-300 series is way past it's expiry date.

Could not agree more. I fly almost weekly SYD-Per and do my best to dodge the 747's.

Leave on a Monday 6.10 to get the Int A330 with Skybeds and return hopefully on 767 or 737 but now I am seeing some flights Per-Syd showing A330 so I am aiming for these flights.:D

747's are constantly late, have many IFE failures and the age of these is definately showing. Broken seats (in J) and power failures so seats dont move are common problems.

I have been flying MEL-PER on the 747-300 for the few weeks on a monday morning. I chose them deliberately due to personal video and less chance of a full flight which has been great. Not a great experience with reliability. 2 weeks ago the flight was delayed by 5 hours and last week it was delayed for 3 hours. This first time i received a letter apologising for the delay but as hard as i looked no voucher was included. As i am planned to be travelling to PER every 1-2 weeks for the next 3-4 months should i write asking for compensation? Has anyone else tried this?

Sorry about the late post here but I'm playing catchup.

The topic of Boeing vs Airbus speeds has been covered some time ago. Suffice to say that the design cruise of the Airbus is about 5% slower than that of Boeing. This is of course ignoring the latest fuel saving measures being implemented by the airlines.

I think the only key point is if you live in Perth and are traveling to MEL or SYD for a trans-pacific intl connection, try to avoid the 743 as your domestic sector :) or vise versa if going Intl via Perth from mel/syd.

...or allow 48 hours ;)
