Qf 747 Windows

Hey all,

Currently choosing seats for an ex-SCL flight back to Sydney… Wondering whether I can see Antarctica from a window seat but don't want to keep the window open for the entire duration of the flight as I imagine a lot of people would want to sleep.

Can anyone shed light on whether the bathrooms have windows I can ogle out of? (Edit: am in J).

No windows in bathroom, but I do remember a small window near an exit door that was in a semi-open area nearby when waiting for bathrooms. I don't think they fly far enough south to see much of Antarctica, but may be mistaken.

I took this flight last year and we did fly far enough south to see icebergs. This was the flight path:



FWIW, I was in Y but the crew instructed everyone to put the window shades down after lunch even though it was daylight outside. So most passengers were completely oblivious to the fact we were flying over Antarctica for several hours.

I think viewing from the galley is your best bet.

I find this infuriating. It's daylight; I want to see outside. If others want to sleep, isn't that what eyeshades are for?

I had a disagreement with an FA a while back who instructed me to put down my blind even though it was the middle of the night. I refused point blank. Told her I wanted to look out and promised faithfully to put it down before the sun rose.

Which it didn't, since it was a night flight from LAX to MEL and it was only barely daylight when we arrived.

Over the last 4 years, I've done this flight on QF and LA, 14 times, 28 sectors. QF27/28 tends to have a flight path slightly more south than the LAN 800/801. Mattg you got lucky. I've only experienced the Antarctic ice shelves once. (mind you last few times I have not watched). Usually the flight path goes between 62 and 66 degrees at its most southerly. Sometimes it goes a little further south from what I hear. As it seems to have been on Mattgs' flight.

If you get near or beyond 66 degrees south, there is a good chance of sighting the ice shelves in winter.

Although , the LAN SCL-SYD is an overnight.

That depends on which aircraft is operating the sector.

I flew SCL-SYD in late May and the 747 operating the sector still had the ex-1st class seats up the pointy end - 747-438? - and I was lucky enough to score one too.

I completely agree. Forcing darkness when it is daylight can play havoc with attempts to counteract jetlag.

I feel like the person who has the window seat gets dibs on whether it stays up or down. I was flying an AM T/C over the US and the "gentleman" on the aisle seat wanted his way the entire flight. T/C over the US yields a lot of interesting views, and I want to see it all.
