On QF457 tonight, flight cancelled due to fuel leak, all passengers transferred to QF459, advised no meal would be available for those passengers transferred, so FA asked every passenger if they were on the transferred flight and if so, no meal supplied but we were handed cookies. Does this happen frequently, no meals for those pax transferred?

If the transfer is done after the catering has been finalised, yes, this is common.

You will often find if you are "brought forward" you go on the basis of catering not assured.

IIRC, 457 is a refreshment flight, so at least the cookies got transferred!

Thanks everyone for filling me in, but us transferred passengers certainly felt like participants in the experiment blue eyes vs brown eyed persons. Brown eyed got the real deal and the blue eyed participants were left wanting. I wanted a meal when everyone else around me was eating what smelt soo good, and I got the cookies!! ;)

I guess the alternative option was to decline the flight and get stuck in SYD. Not optimal.

Yep Docjames you are right, get home or spend another night in lovely Sydney town, no not a great choice! When you just want to head home.

but do drop a quick note to Qantas Frequent Flyer or Customer Care and you should get some compensation your way :)

What happened to the OP can also happen if there is a last minute aircraft substitution. This happened to me recently (thankfully) on a refreshment service so the impact to Y pax is minimal as they still have some food loaded but not the full selection. Those in J got the short straw as there were no catering loaded so they were all given packs of mixed nuts and pretzels.

Was your flight originally a refreshment flight or a meal flight?

I'd say none would be due if the OP was on a refreshment flight.

sorry my bad - for some reason i thought the OP was flying business class (which would have entitled them to more than just a cookie even on a refreshment flight!)

There is no mention of class - so you may be right. I just assumed it was Y.

Thanks for responding everyone just I had never had this occur before and wondered if it was the norm. As even the FA made a comment as to how they were going to handle this.
Only on Y as can't see the value in J for short haul, saying that flew J recently Perth to Mel and it obviously not my day, as my pick of the Rubeun was absolutely in edible, don't you hate that when your pick is the pits! Cheers V

Meal flights on short haul east coast runs always start at 6pm and end at 8pm, anything before or after is refreshment.
