Qatar's new DOH to SYD service

Experienced Al Mourjan last week on my return IST-DOH-MEL. Missed it on the outward leg due to delayed departure from MEL leaving a tight connection.

I had a longish 7 hour layover. Landing at DOH approx 6pm Wednesday, immediately noticed how quiet the airport was compared to outward, which was on a Monday about 7am. Strolled to Al Mourjan. Huge and almost empty. Went straight for the showers, which were great. Upstairs to the restaurant, which is both A La Carte and buffet. Tried the buffet, which was pleasant. Still hungry, the hostess offered a la carte, a limited menu 4 or 5 choices in each course. My eyes went immediately to a Fillet Steak. Hell ya, sounds great, I'll have that.

But, upon ordering it M-R, was told that is only W-D. Hmmph! Changed my mind to the salmon fillet (without thinking!) So, got an overcooked salmon fillet. But, otherwise fine. Service was terrific. Some nice wines, but alas no Krug to be had. I did ask!

Went to check out the duty free, which was very disappointing, price wise. Most of the items I was interested in were actually cheaper retail in OZ. Returned to lounge about 8pm to find it was still very quiet. Had a chat to one of the staff. He was expecting it to get much busier about 10pm. So, I went to the more casual restaurant at the far end, which was very good. Should have gone there first.

Nap time...had a choice of the realaxing chairs hiding out the back, or the quiet area. 5 minutes in the quiet area was enough. The snoring from the next cubicle was impossible to bear. SO, went to the relaxing chairs, which was fine, with the exception of it being near a staff entrance. Arose about 11:30pm, and indeed it was busier, but certainly not what I would call busy. Overall, very enjoyable time.

As for the flights in J, just about perfect. Service was great. The dine at anytime system was great, although my outward flight, I was exhausted after having to go to work unexpectedly on the morning at 5am, spending the day running around. With a departure time from MEL of 23:55 (actual 00:45) I had a very long day. So, upon sitting in my seat, I ordered some dinner , a glass of champagne and then promptly fell asleep..lol. Obviously I was well and truly asleep as either I couldn't be woken or they choose to let me sleep. ;)

Woke up around 3 hours out, ordered and got a great meal. Cannot fault it. The return leg, I was more in tune to enjoying the flight. Very good food and service. Highly recommend Qr's J product, both hard and soft.

In the Al Mourjan lounge now about to board for SYD (2010 dep). Much quiter than the morning connections from SYD.
