Tonight's news reports were full of Qatar's brand new service from Doha to Sydney. The first flight landed in Sydney tonight.
Meanwhile, I am desperately trying to find J or F redemption seats from Europe in September.
Hooray, I think. If the flights have only just been announced, surely there will be reward seats available.
No such luck. AA, BA and Qantas don't have any availability. Or perhaps they don't have the flights on their systems yet? Any ideas?
Its annoying because there is plenty of availability into Doha.
I'm annoyed I just bought a swag of AA miles that may turn out to be useless. All the seats that showed three days ago have evaporated.

Often what little availability there is isn't shown online, you may need to call but YMMV...

Yes, it makes sense that those seats disappeared quickly.
After spending 6 or 7 hours searching today, I lucked on to 2 x CX J seats HKG to BNE, then found MAN - HKG on CX. So I'm happy with that.
i just called AA and booked it all.
its a bit of a convoluted way to get to Sydney, and we weren't planning on going to England, but, what the hell. Time for another lunch at the Pipe and Glass, the best gastropub in England, and Yorkshire pudding like you can only get in, well, Yorkshire!

Remember you can always make 'placeholder' bookings. That is, find any seat on the route or routes you want, secure it and then change the date without penalty when someone more to your liking hopefully becomes available.

Didn't know about booking another date, then changing when availability comes up.
The AAdvantage operator also suggested I could grab economy seats on my preferred flights, then upgrade later if availability opened up, also with no penalty.

I reckon Qatar has the best long haul business class soft product I have flown (out of CX, QF, TG, UA, IB, BR, EK, QR), though I haven't flown EY. The a la carte dining actually truly works like a restaurant and the food is great (better than TG F). Full mattress and pyjamas and great service by the staff. Hard product was dam good as well with so much space on the 777's, 3 windows!

Happy to hear that! Flying QR Sunday night! I've read overwhelming great reviews. Looking forward to it. Just wish it gave a little more SC on QFF? Just a little more;)

Enjoy! Looking forward to hearing your feedback. Our recent trip on QR was a long one, EZE-GRU-DOH-PER, about 26 hours of flying!

One thing I forgot to mention is the lounge in DOH is awesome. Head upstairs for a la carte dining (just ask one of the waiters and they will give you a menu, had amazing lamb chops). Also if there is a line at the main showers head down the end through the 'grazing' restaurant area where there is a quiet zone which has more showers.

Mrs Lime and i spend few hours slumming it in that QR DOH lounge, as said bloody awesome.

I went to their new Al Safwa First Lounge in Doha in November now that lounge is out of this world amazing! It's just annoying that only first pax are allowed in as on the return journey only business class was available on the plane so had to goto Al mourjan business lounge which was still good but crowded and no slumber rooms. :D

So OWE travelling in J can only access the J lounge and not the F lounge? The following extract from the OW website appears to say OWE can use the F lounge.

I am booked on JFK-DOH-SIN in J at the end of the year so I would like to give the DOH F lounge a try if possible.

BA get away with refusing OWE access to the Concorde Room by saying that they offer a F lounge and the Concorde Room is a level above.

My understanding is that status PAX flying in Y can only access these lounges in the main terminal.
There is a separate premium terminal for F & J ticketed PAX which cannot be accessed on the basis of status.
The Al Safwa and Al Mourjan lounges are in this premium terminal. This exclusion is referred to on the OneWorld site (below the section you quoted above):
I do not know whether status allows you to jump from the J lounge to the F lounge if you can access the premium terminal when ticketed in J.

{EDIT} Looking again at the QR website I suspect the "separate terminal" only exists in the minds of PR consultants. It seems the exclusive lounges are on Level 3 of the Terminal.

The premium terminal closed some time ago when the main terminal was refurbished, it's now all in one.

The Al ... lounges are like the BA Concorde Room, and access by CoS only, not OW status. Kinda cough but hey, that's what it is.

So as WP in J you can only access the Business or First OW lounges or Al Mourjan Business Lounge, sadly.

Correct, there are actually 4 lounges Al Safwa (equivalent to super elite first lounge, only when flying first). Al Mourjan Business lounge (though equiv to a first lounge, only when flying business). QR first lounge (ok but ordinary for a first lounge, OWE when flying economy). QR business lounge (Again ok but ordinary, OWS when flying economy).

I passed through this morning SYD-DOH-AMS in J. First timer on QR.

I would have loved to have gone to the Al Safwa lounge, but the Al Mourjan was pretty impressive. It seemed quiet'ish when I arrived but the place was pretty full by the time I left.

TIP (possibly mentioned earlier) - if anyone else is a 'shower after 14hrs flying' kind of person, then go directly to the downstairs restaurant and the extra showers off to the right.

al mourjan is more than enough lounge for anyone used to qantas lounges, more than enough actually. but the giant cane furniture is a bit torturous and cheap looking? odd choice
