I was surprised and delighted to learn from Qatar staff in Melbourne as I checked in for the flight that they had joined One World in October. The young guy on check in rang his supervisor to double-check, and yes, my emerald status would be recognised. I was instantly given lounge access and preferred seating (three seats to myself!). I asked him to enter my qantas frequent flyer number so I could keep all my points together, but he had technical troubles and said he'd get it updated later. In Doha they had the same problem and told me to contact customer service.

Customer care informed me that Qatar weren't joining for another 12-18 months - which is what I'd initially thought. Ah well. It was nice while it lasted.

lol. clueless check-in. nice perks you mistakenly received

It seems Qatar has this warm, welcoming, 'we're a family; let's look after each other' mentality. Give them time to properly join oneworld and they'll quickly learn that's not how it's done!

Good to hear the Qatar staff are showing enthusiasm for their pending OW membership. Let's hope it last well into their actual membership.
