Re: Qatar Airlines likely to join Oneworld

Will TAM even exist with the amalgamation with LAN? If they amalgamate, won't they simply become LAN Brazil or similar?

Re: Qatar Airlines likely to join Oneworld

1>, When Taca-Avianca joined star alliance. In their press release they said: Its Brazil company will not be a member of star alliance due to TAM membership in star alliance. they said very clearly that the TACA-Avianca Brazil star alliance membership will not be decided or clear until December 2012. I read that as: TAM will not quit star alliance until the earliest December 2012.

2>, If TAM is to join oneworld on 8th october, I would expect LAN CEO or Managing Director would be among those attending the ceremony. But he is not in the list mentioned.

So I still think the 8th october announcement is more or less a ME airline. TAM may come next quarter, or come as a suppliment of this announcement.

But the Qatar CEO doesn't arrive in the USA until 24/10.And that is for their new destination ORD.

Will TAM even exist with the amalgamation with LAN? If they amalgamate, won't they simply become LAN Brazil or similar?

Has been announced they will continue as 2 airlines at present just with the one ownership.

Well announcing that he'll be in the US would be a give away especially after this denial.
Qatar Airways has no plans to join oneworld alliance: CEO | Reuters

Surely QF management was aware that OW was going to sign up one of the ME3 and obviously not the anti-alliance EK. If not, then that's a level of incompetence we have yet to witness.

QF discussed some kind of partnership with QR but it seems to have gone no where. QF would know if QR were joining oneworld since they would have to vote on it. But the choice of EK over QR is obvious. They've got more routes and frequencies.

Yes I checked reuters too. And they say LATAM will decide the alliance issue in first half of 2013! So it can not be TAM as I suspected.

It might not be QR neither...So who is it going to be? jet Airways? Emirates?

Or like someone else mentioned maybe QF knows QR is joining and they rushed the deal with EK so that they won't face pressure from QR on working too closely with EK? Well, another 7 days we would know.

Would personally be thrilled if it were EK and if the tie-up with QF gets approved

Re: Qatar Airlines likely to join Oneworld

Have we considered that it could well be a Chinese Airline? As this is a recognised hole on the OW coverage. CX excluded on the basis that is predominately Hong Kong not Mainland China.

EK, and its CEO have maintained a strong anti-alliance stance, particularly based on the strength of the dominant (read European and US) carriers in decision making within the alliance.

If you read the various rumours, that observations seems to hold true for the DL/KL/AF domination of Skyteam and LH/UA domination of star. But are AA/BA/IB as dominant within oneworld? Also it is not unprecedented that an airline can be in an alliance and still do their own thing thumbing their nose at the big carriers in the alliance (I am thinking SQ here)!

The announcement says "significant membership"

It does not specifically say a new member. It could be a combination of things. A few smaller carriers joining and a major, such as BA or QF leaving.

Re: Qatar Airlines likely to join Oneworld

How about Jetstar? *stirs the pot*

Although given the announcement is in New York, I think it could perhaps be JetBlue or US Airways leaving Star?

Re: Qatar Airlines likely to join Oneworld

Rumours about OW new members has not always proven accurate-
oneworld ready to welcome Qantas

I think in this particular case it was just that Qantas' Red Q airline never got off the ground, let alone got to the point of applying for OneWorld, this article was just accurately reporting that OneWorld said Red Q could be welcome but would need to apply like all the rest.

But if Qatar isn't about to join OneWorld, which is what reports are now saying or at least what Qatar's boss is now saying, that would be a shame. I think it would be a great addition to OneWorld.

re: [Confirmed] Qatar May be Invited to Join One World

I always thought QR would be a much better partner for QF than EK.

Apparently they are in deep talks with BA about a JV for Australia bound passengers though!

Financial Times: Qatar Airways joins Oneworld alliance - FlyerTalk Forums
Qatar Airways joins oneworld alliance - FT.com

Qatar Airways is set to be the first of the fast-expanding Gulf carriers to become a member of one of the global airline alliances, by agreeing to join oneworld.

The move is a coup for oneworld, whose members are led by American Airlines and British Airways, and underlines how the Gulf carriers may no longer be viewed with hostility by western airlines.

This is still one journalists opinion.reuters says the exact opposite. The Qatar CEO in separate interviews previously referenced has denied being in talks with BA and then denied they are joining OW.
I think we all really need to wait until next Monday/Tuesday.
