Qantas has today announced a new codeshare agreement with Bangkok Airways which will significantly improve travel options for Qantas customers travelling across South East Asia.
From 30 March, Qantas customers will be able to book on Bangkok Airways services from Bangkok and Singapore to six new destinations in Thailand, including Ko Samui, Chiang Mai and coughet.*
Qantas International Chief Executive Officer Simon Hickey said the agreement was another step forward in delivering on the airline’s strategy to offer the best options for customers travelling between Australia and Asia.
“This partnership is great news for our customers travelling to resort destinations in Thailand.
“The new codeshare services will allow customers to connect to their holiday destination via Bangkok or Singapore, with more opportunities to earn frequent flyer points and have their luggage checked straight through to their final destination,” said Mr Hickey.
Qantas and Bangkok Airways are working towards a reciprocal agreement which will enable Bangkok Airways customers to book on Qantas international services from Bangkok and Singapore to Australia, and on a number of routes on Qantas’ domestic network.

This announcement follows other recent initiatives to boost the strength of Qantas’ offering into Asia, including a new codeshare with China Southern, new premium lounges in Singapore (April 2013) and Hong Kong (March 2014) and a major upgrade of the airline’s A330 fleet starting from end-2014.
The following codeshare services operated by Bangkok Airways will be available for booking and travel from 30 March 2014*:
·

  • Singapore – Ko Samui

  • Bangkok – Ko Samui
  • Bangkok – coughet
  • Bangkok – Chiang Mai
  • Bangkok – Krabi
  • Bangkok – Chiang Rai

* Subject to regulatory approval.

Cheaper to codeshare than try and expand 3K into these markets?

That's my guess, plus at least you can interline baggage (if the announcement is true).

Only main downside is no lounge access, but 3K wouldn't guarantee that anyway (due to no QF affiliate lounge in target destinations).

PG has its own boutique lounge offered for PAX travelling on any class. I've visited domestic lounges in BKK and CNX, both are pretty good.

My questions is will this codeshare earn status credit and will it able to be booked alone or has to combined with a QF international flight first (QF23 is the only one I can think of to BKK or a few others to SIN)?

If its got a QF number, it will earn as per normal (only exception being JQ) I imagine.

Well, if it can be booked standalone and the fare level on par with directly booking on PG site, then this is going to be one of my favs for future status run!

I doubt that will be the case, its unlikely they have Cabotage.

Plus, I have a feeling that for USM, there are restrictions on aircraft size, that mean they can't take A320's. Basically three aircraft type operate there - AT7's (Bangkok Airways & Firefly), A319's (Bangkok & Silkair) and 734's (Thai). Both Thai (smiles) & Silkair have A320's in their fleet but don't fly to USM.

Good news for those travelling to those destinations on Qantas tickets.

Lounge access for PG at Changi is only available to pax travelling in J class.

Great news. Another QF destination that's not a 'dead end' anymore. Hopefully they might even add PG as a FF earning partner.

This is true for their airports in Thailand, but not Singapore. PG uses another airline's lounge at Changi, so no PG status + Y ticket in SIN = no lounge access.

This thread is about the Qantas codeshare which excludes Changi.
