Hi All

Was thinking about going to Singapore next weekend to watch the grand prix and thought I might try and use some QFF points. All was looking good, 50000 points each person return in Y and availability. Go to next page for the review and hey presto 50000 points plus $462 in taxes etc. Included in the $462 was a charge that they call the "carrier charge" of $350.

Now I can book and pay for a fare with more flexibility regarding departure and arrival times for about the same money.

What a joke this program is becoming!!

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

At least (I assume ) it was on QF metal. I've seen cases where SIN-MEL it offers a seat on the QF code on flights operated by Jetstar. 60000 points plus the $460 (or whatever) in surcharges, and jumped onto the Jetstar website and could get the exact same flight for $450. If taking the QF award, net result is you have to pay QF $10 and in return they relieve you of 60,000 pts.

Calling this (below) J Class and charging accordingly, to me, is a joke too....

You'd be better off buying a Red eDeal and a bottle of Dom...

I'm of the opinion that QF's taxes and surcharges are way above the average. I have never heard of that "carrier charge"? I am trying to think of innovative ways of using accrued points, instead of using for travel.
I have been buying discount economy on QF from travel agents because I can get the dates and times I want and still get points, but not slugged with the huge taxes and charges if using my FF points.
No "body", is looking at how QF arrives at it's taxes and charges, and with that ... <Irish person> ...in charge, I'm guessing it's dodgy!!

Best you don't fly BA then. On short haul, ie the same length routes where Qantas are using the config above there is no difference between economy seats and business class seats, except the cost and service.

Yeah, did LH J a few months ago. Intra-Europe J is a joke, we all know this.
But, QF are operating up to 4 different seat types on transcon routes.
Consistency would be nice for a ~$1500, one way price tag.

This 'carrier surcharge' is a fuel surcharge and most non-middle eastern airlines charge this on award bookings. So do Singapore airlines so the comment saying they switched to SQ is silly, since the surcharges are very similar to Qantas.

Everybody knows there is simply no value in international Y class bookings on points. Use them for business where the fuel surcharge makes up such a small value of what the fare is that it is not such a big deal.

I am going up to SIN next weekend 21OCT-25OCT with SCOOT on a promo fare of $176 round trip, most of which is taxes or charges!!
It ain't Qantas, but it's very cheap!!:D

It's extremely cheap and hey, at that price who cares what the seat and service is like.

The US airlines don't charge the fuel surcharge on award bookings.

Yes this is true, most carriers in this part of the world charge similar crazy fuel surcharges. But I guess it hurts less (particularly if you earn points through credit card at same accrual rate) to fork out 34K pts + $390, than 50K pts + $460.
