Qantas upgrades SYD-JNB to A380 service

I can now buy revenue J flights on the A380 but not F...also as mentioned above, there are now no J or F awards available on this route in August...all the previous availability I think was not intended and have been pulled....

I’d take anything qantas says with a grain of salt. The fact that F is zero’d out isn’t a good sign.

Interesting, although still not possible on the Qf website, I can book Syd -Jnb rtn in F using an OTA...can even book seats :) Cost around 10.5 K for the return flight.

Reward bookings were soooo much simpler and actually fairer PI (pre internet)…..
Was hoping it would stay quiet for a few more days so I could book my return flights. I never tell a soul when they crop up. At least I got the ones over to Jo'burg but the dates haven't opened up yet for the return.

Welcome onboard AFF Airlines.

Re: MattG's comments, that is one of the points the Aust Senate wants QF to reply about.
Surely Qantas wouldn’t sell seats it didn’t intend to operate?😝

I can never find many reward seats on this route these days, unless I'm just not looking hard enough, or long enough in advance.

Sunday afternoon called from the Drysdale Station campground and requested J seat release for bAlt from JNB to BNE on Aug 24 next year. Very excited to be given the thumbs up. Gotta love the extra seats the A380 provides. I'll post this on the release thread as well.

First is for sale again. No awards though so that was clearly a stuffup (who’d have thunk it?!!). Very occasional J available but can’t find any F.

I like the way ETOPs 180 and 330 are "discussed". ETOPs is a game of odds, and the gamble is that when something goes wrong it won't happen at that most distant point. Sooner or later the luck of an ETOPs flight will run out. Yes, they can fly 330 minutes on one engine, but it's also assumed that it's a clean shutdown, without any other damage. Anything that increases the drag, or stops the aircraft maintaining the required altitude will result in a lack of essence.

I do get @freqflyer77 sentiment above. I guess it was highly likely that there will be F seats on the A380...I think it is a glitch that most of the F cabin is available for award points. I can't look a gift horse in the mouth and booked 2x return F seats (Botswana / Namibia / Cape Town here we come!!) What are the best seats on the A380 F for a couple? We have 1A/2A outbound and 2A/3A inbound for a change

Both the outbound and inbound are now showing the A380 with the F cabin seats on Expert Flyer :)
...and based on the 1:2:1 seat configuration in J, it's the refurbished A380. :)

On my reckoning, to date, there are no reward J seats available for SYD/JNB in 2024 , despite upgrade from 787 to 380 in Jul. Req min 467000+ points.
One remaining J reward for 94900 pts on 6 Nov.
Another interesting fact: Depending on dates, JNB/BNE in J is around $ 1800 cheaper on QR via DOH than on QF via SYD. Provided time is not a factor, who wouldn't prefer 2 serves of 6 star service ( may also include 5 star o/n accn in DOH) against 1 and a bit serve of QF 4 star service ?

I can see a bunch of CR availability across whY, Y+, J and F.

Really, where and what date range in 2024 ?
Only interested in J
I started in Oct and searched back. Sprinkled in each month through July before I stopped looking. I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s been a batch release.

Thanks and noted. I only looked until end of Jun as my preferred fwd journey is late Feb, early Mar. I will keep my options open for maybe later in 2024 but still hoping for something earlier.

For what it's worth, frequency declines to 4x weekly with the introduction of the A380, meaining that J capacity isn't significantly up (although first, PE and economy is). See: Surprised or not surprised? Qantas schedules A380 flights to Johannesburg in 2024 - Analytic Flying

That said, I see quite a bit of reward capacity available from July onwards.

I’ve got zilch from July 1 onwards. Actually, the only one I can find is next week (so I assume a cancelation). Probably status related (QP Silver)

Perhaps an excuse to restart PER/JUN if they have spare acft.
