We have had mixed success on upgrade requests for South America. As Gold FF we were successful on a Buenos Aires leg to Sydney from PE to J but last year nix on the Santiago - Sydney flight (PE - J requested). Both flights were almost full - January and late October. Not sure about the chances for an upgrade from Y to J for a NB based on our experience. PE was a good product as both flights were more or less daylight (i.e. leaving in the morning).

I was on a JASA SCL-SYD in late May and J was only about a third full. I was in 1K with nobody else in rows 1-2 - very nice .

A FA said it was also light down the back. It's luck of the draw with all these things.

I was also unsuccessful with PE to J on QF27 SYD - SCL in March, even though the QF staff tried hard for me both in the FLounge and at the gate. In fact I was last to board because they were still trying up to the last minute.

They said that LAN has an entitlement to half the J seats on the QF metal, and there is nothing QF can do with those seats if LAN does not sell them. They just stay empty. Not a good route for points upgrades for that reason.

Interesting :(.

I would have thought they would revert to the pool at a set time before departure, or at least give the CSM more latitude for upgrades ?

Hi, For those who may have followed this thread, today I booked us both SYD-SCL return in PE hoping to be able to upgrade to J, as has been said by JohnM it will be luck of the draw and if unsuccessful will still give us PE which from what I have heard is not that bad on QF, J would be better so we will see, I hope half the seat allocation in J is not reserved for LAN and travels empty if not sold, seems like a real waste when QF could get more of our points, selling us the upgrade. I also booked us SCL-BOG return on Avianca in J for just over $3k, less than QF/LAN wanted for economy, be interesting see what they are like in J, we have traveled Avianca in the past but in Y.

When are you travelling?

My trip isn't until Nov-Dec.

I'll be interested to hear what you think of PE if the UPG doesn't come through and whether or not you get the UPG.
