On QF24 this week no one was offered the turndown service.
After dinner, when the lights were dimmed I lost hope and decided to place the mattress myself. As I was doing that I noticed others were doing the same thing as well.

It's a relatively new service so I was wondering if it's offered only on selected flights or the crew just forgot about it?

On my LAX return flights a month ago I said to the crew don't bother with mine I can do it myself when I'm ready. Upon returning form the bathroom it was done anyway. Very good I say.

After the first time I watched the crew do it (shortly after it was introduced), I subsequently do it myself. It feels weird to me to stand there and watch someone "make my bed" for me!

I have noticed since then though that there generally more people are doing it themselves (the freq fliers) and the crew are likely picking up on this and generally offering only for those that seem unsure or new.

I agree that DIY is too easy if you know what to do.

On my flight I noticed that some went to sleep without arranging the mattress and I'm sure there were a few who didn't know this service even exists.

Not everyone in J are regular FF and some even pay top $$ for their ticket so they should be informed about all the new services.

I'm not aware that its a sector-selective service; its not that new either. On my recent flights from MNL and separately from SIN the crew seemed to prefer to do the turn down rather than having the pax do it.

Might have just been a particular crew thing in the OPs experience. But funny they "all" forgot about it.

I've found the service of little value, personally. I'd also image it's a bit of an impost on the FA's time (but they are best to speak to that), not to mention the inconvenience for the pax when it's time to put it away prior to descent.
Now find me something that makes sense of my $ (I'll get back to you on that).

I did it myself on QF108 in April. Not hard to slip the mattress on. But I can see how some folk would have trouble with it, especially if they were new to the seats.

And yes, I'd feel uncomfortable at having someone half my age make up my bed for me.
