Qantas to Norfolk Island

Thanks aus-flyer. The travel period is missing from two different sections of the ‘Fly Flexible’ rules in relation to award bookings including the FAQ 🙁 No mention of travel dates on their website as of this morning.

Well this is good news on a boring day! I’m presently on my lunch break looking for reward seats! I wonder if QF will experiment with any other routes flying there…

As for using JQ, it wouldn't surprise me if the tender requirements state that the product must be a full service airline providing a minimum number of seats/freight per service. This likely rules out JQ and even smaller carriers like TL or QQ who could be interested.
Is NZ really a full service airline on their A320's?

Just discovered that the travel period quoted by aus-flyer applies to revenue fares according to QF website -

Norfolk Island will require all visitors to be vaccinated from next Monday, but will reopen to travellers from NSW, ACT & Victoria with a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken within 72 hours of arrival.

Where are the testing requirements mentioned? I'm reading that as though as of 29/11, if you're vaxxed you can enter from VIC/NSW/ACT - testing only appears to be mentioned for those travelling from the aforementioned states right now, who are essential workers or NF residents and therefore permitted to enter (all others from those states not being permitted).

Has anyone had any experience transferring on to a domestic flight from NLK -> SYD? Is your bagged through checked to your destination or is it treated like international where it needs to be collected and rechecked?

I’ve not needed to do it, but those who did on my flight were collecting and rechecking (as per INT -> DOM @ SYD).

When I came back last bags had to be collected (in Brisbane) and taken through customs etc, then rechecked

From SYD/BNE to Norfolk it's the standard 100ml limit. Coming back from Norfolk there is no limit (it's treated like a domestic flight).
Hi - is this still the case with liquids? Leaving NLK on Friday and wondering whether to pack DF in checked or carry on.

It is correct. Departing SYD/BNE is a domestic flight from an international terminal so international liquids rules apply. The return NLK/SYD or NLK/BNE is a domestic flight from a domestic terminal and the domestic rules apply to liquids. You can carry it on when you depart from NLK.

Looks like Norfolk Island has paused all arrivals (except returning residents and essential workers) until 27 January.

From then, the entry requirement will be either a PCR test before arrival or a RAT before & after arrival.

This has been ongoing since the 6th of January. A search of today (17th) Qantas flight reveals there was just 18 people on-board (all in Economy).

The island has a population of 1748 (at 2016 census), they've now had 65 positive cases. At one point there was ~150 contact in isolation but I guess the positive news is that almost 100% of the population is fully vaccinated and ~25% have had boosters.

Interestingly, Qantas has a schedule loaded for NLK that is bookable right into 2023 -- well beyond slated end of their current contract that was previously extended to 30 June 2022. Air NZ has nothing loaded at all. Possible QF is taking over this route for good?

It was only last year that it was announced that the Air NZ contract was to be extended a further two years until 27 August 2023.

Great to see QF operating NLK for the foreseeable future anyway. I'd prefer to visit the island with QF as it makes for an excellent FF redemption.
