Thanks. We still have a week to play with but D-Day for the hotel is on Easter Monday. If we get any refund, it has to be cancelled by then. But there are penalties involved and I can't get through to Amex travel online either by phone or chat.

Was it an automatic approval? Or does a human look at it and get back to you?

Brisbane is no longer a hotspot? As long as you weren't at any of the places on the contact list?

It was automated...I answered "no" to everything. You can't apply earlier than 3 days prior to arrival.

One thing to note is that unlike domestic travel you'll need to show this Norfolk Island pass at check-in. Showing it on a phone is fine but if you do this make sure you've got a copy of the PDF saved as when you land at Norfolk you're unlikely to have data (there is free wifi at the airport that normally works ok).

When the plane arrives someone will typically get on board and play a recorded message through their phone over the PA system (it appears to be the same message the AU gov uses on inbound international flights). Once done you'll walk off the plane, have your temperature checked upon entering the terminal building and wait for baggage claim.

To somewhat prevent crowding they use those rope barriers things and funnel the plane into a few groups but as I had no checked baggage I was able to just leave, this is when you show your Australian arrival card (there are no passport/ID checks and they're only checking the arrival card for your fruit/meat declaration) and walk out the door. As you walk out the door on the left is a counter staffed by Norfolk Island council staff who check your Norfolk border pass, they're more interested in seeing the name on the pass as they've already got printed a full list of all the passengers and once they tick your name off you're free to go.

Do you need to also complete the Australian Travel Declaration (ATD) for arrival back into Sydney from Norfolk Island? The Qantas web site provides a prompt to complete one, but this might just be a default message.

Nope, you don't need to complete one.

Qantas is incorrect in prompting for one, coming back to QLD or NSW (from Norfolk Island) you don't need any paperwork or online forms. Onboard the flight they'll hand out the standard Australian arrival card but nothing else is needed.

There was a bit of discussion about this earlier in another thread:

Arrival process is quick and easy...got off plane via stairs to tarmac and walked to terminal. Collected bag, showd Australian arrival card to quarantine officer, and then got bags xrayed. Next is to show your travel pass and get temperature checked and that's it - took maybe 10 - 15 mins but we were 1st off plane and our bag was the 5th one out. ;) Found rental car and off we went...

Ps Ray Martin and Ken Duncan are shooting a documentary on the island...Ray said hello so I said hello back. :)

haha literally everything about that is perfect even down to the Qantas in association with Air NZ.
Post automatically merged:

When you fly back take note, is there QF branding now in the termimal. Air NZ used to have Air NZ signs for premium queues etc so it'd be interesting to see if they're still there.

The local travel agency also does the ground handling for Air NZ so I assume they'd also do the ground handling for QF. Their staff always wore Air NZ uniforms so it'd be interesting to see what they've done there as well.

Hi kpc, we will be flying to NLK on Sunday April 18. How are you finding availability of groceries etc in shops following the shortage due to the shipping delays? I've read that a ship did arrive and unload a few weeks ago so hopefully things are back to normal for them now. We still plan to bring some long life milk with us.

You can't bring ftesh ftuit / veges / nuts and uncooked prawns. Fresh meat is available at Butchers in Mall at slightly more expensive prices than Sydney. Shop not open on Sunday so you will have to wait til Monday. Limited fresh fruit available...I saw bananas, persimmons and jack fruit. Ditto for fresh veges but frozen is avaliable. Generally staples, snacks etc are available at 50-100% more than price in Sydney...so you could bring this if you wish to save some $$ esp for s longer trip The main supermarket Foodland has most but not all the things you want and may not be your preferred brand. Milk and bakery items readily avaliable. Bring wine (if that's your sin) as the liquor shop has limited oprions but also had NZ ones....but need to pack in checked luggage due to liquid rule at Syd International. (Only one place selling coffee post security and all cafes, restaurants, lounges are closed but a couple of DF shops open). The liquor and sprits are Ok price wise in Norfolk. BOOK ALL RESTAURANTS YOU DESIRE PREARRIVAL AS THEY ARE BOOKED OUT if left too late. ..can do online or by email. We have eaten at Bounty and Grill, and Homestead and both are good esp. the latter. We are eating at Hilli tomorrow. Ignore the fish and chip shop in town as the owner was not that friendly and prices not cheap at all...also a bit oily! If you are into snorkelling bring your gear as the water is still warm and it is excellent snorkelling at Emily / Slaughter Bays. The 4G is quite fast at about 23 mbps download (WiFi where we stayed was slow) and Sim card best bought at the Norfolk Telecom shop open M- F 9-4 only...good coverage throughout island as well. Also good to have a local number and to make calls if car breaks down - the $30 tourist Sim card fits this bill. Comes with 2 GB data but can be topped up. Hope this helps with planning your trip :)

This is good to know. When I was there last December the older 2G was the only thing active (the 4G was in test mode so couldn't connect), at least back then it was still possible to roam with an Australian sim card something the new network apperently doesn't support.

Sitting on the plane about to depart NLK. If you have any Qs ask away before I forget. Petrol is $2.22 per L. No liquid rule applies on departure. Have travel insurance as flights can be cancelled due to poor weather like 2 days ago, and Qf will not cover weather related cancellation expenses. You can basically see/do nearly everything in a week! Don't be shocked by the price of fresh fruit / veges. 3 bananas and 1/2 a very small watermelon cost me $9.50!!. Boat trips eg fishing / scenic are very weather and sea dependent and ours was cancelled yesterday due to rough seas.

Nevermind, just saw the post above! Thanks!

What are the rules for liquids etc in carry on luggage? Domestic or international? Flying out soon and ideally doing handluggage only.

From SYD/BNE to Norfolk it's the standard 100ml limit. Coming back from Norfolk there is no limit (it's treated like a domestic flight).

Looks like Air Chathams is resuming AKL-NLK flights from 27 May 2021 using Saab 340s.

Perhaps Norfolk Island could become an interesting stopover option to/from NZ?
