Qantas strike-free for four years?

Well if they aren't negotiating a pay/conditions deal for three to four years then there is in theory no need to strike. Most EBAs are around three years.

However if QF decide to outsource all maintenance to Botswana the engineers might go on strike in protest...

Its more a reduced likelihood of industrial action than any solid guarantee... Barring the unusual...

It is technically illegal to conduct Industrial Action outside a Bargaining Period. It would not be deemed as "protected industrial action".

So QF are relying on after the arbitrated outcome (whenever that is) their employees covered by those Agreements, if they are negotiated to run the full 4 years as allowed under the Act, will not be able to take any legal and protected industrial action whilst those Agreements are still in force.

I think that statement will be short lived:

QANTAS pilots have convinced the Federal Court to fast-track their legal battle to resume industrial action against the airline. Today in Sydney the court agreed to expedite a hearing for the legal challenge to Fair Work Australia's ban on industrial action by the pilots against Qantas.
Lawyers acting for the Australian and International Pilots' Association are seeking leave to restart their industrial action claiming it caused no financial pain to Qantas and was separate and distinct from the industrial action taken by other airline staff that created delays and crippled the company earlier this year.

Acting AIPA President Captain Brad Hodson, told news.com.au: "Qantas pilots' only industrial action was to wear red ties and making brief, positive in-flight announcements.

"These actions were not causing economic damage and therefore shouldn't have been terminated by FWA."

I was very pleased not to get a lecture from the pilot this morning. It will be annoying to if they come back. Given the marginal difference in price and service between DJ and QF this might incline me to cancel my QF bookings and rebook with DJ. I know it sounds petty but so is wasting time, money and resources in court battles.
